Basically:Legend of Zelda NES, or Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? I look forward to seeing the battles that will play out below....mwahahahahahaha.......MWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I like the way that ocarina of time made it seem like you were exploring but really the only place that you do not have to go at all for the story is lon lon ranch and the fishing hole. But the way Zelda 1 and the upcoming Zelda Breath of the Wild looks like they will have that true exploration based where if you want to wander into the 8th temple sure go ahead do it, but with the lack of items and hearts will be your ultimate limiting factor.

Well, it's been confirmed BotW will be open-world, exploration based.

I enjoy linear Zelda games like TP, however, but I have no problems with this decision.

While I find both of these options to be an excellent fit for the Zelda series, the open-world exploration option just adds so much more to the replay value and keeps the game interesting long after release, much like the still-beloved Skyrim or Fallout 3. I think Wind Waker too had an excellent balance of Linear gameplay and open-world exploration.
