Here's an interesting Mario fact: Super Mario Bros. 2 USA was ultimately what the developers considered to be the true sequel to Super Mario Bros.

What they had in mind was that instead of horizontal scrolling levels like the previous title, they should focus on vertical scrolling levels in their next title. They experimented on the concept but found it to be too boring, so they threw in horizontal scrolling too. The fabled "Lost Levels" was really more of a hard mode SMB1.
