A Guide to Mario Kart 7 Tips and Tricks

Howdy! I'm new around here but definitely not new to Mario Kart 7. I haven't seen a lot of talk about Mario Kart 7 but considering it's my favorite game at the moment (beside Chrono Trigger, of course), I'd like to share some tips and tricks that I compiled that you may have not known. I've tested all these pointers so if you're having trouble I can help, otherwise, here's the list:

- At the beginning of the race, right before the "2" in the countdown fades, begin accelerating and you will receive a boost.

- Drive directly behind a player until blue streaks begin to appear and eventually you will receive a boost to overtake the player in front of you.

- Hit R as you get on the ramp to get more air.

- Alternately, hit R as you exit the ramp to get a boost when you land.

- Collect coins. This will greatly impact the results of your race. Not only will it improve your top speed but it will also deter other players from reaching their top speed.

- Do not use mushrooms right before turns.

- Sound is your friend. Despite being able to visually see projectiles aimed at or towards you, the sound can help you determine how far away the projectile is, all the while focusing on the race and being able to combat projectiles without having the look at the distance.

- To hit a red/green shell coming towards you from behind, press the down button and then the item button to send your projectile item towards the shell. Be sure to do this when the shell is close to you so you actually hit it.

- Additionally you can hit a player behind you with a banana peel, red shell, or green shell by pressing the down button and releasing the item.

- To hit a projectile (banana peel, red shell, green shell) in front of you, just release the item normally. Make sure you're actually aiming if needed.

- You're able to off road without losing speed when in star mode or during a mushroom boost. Use this to your advantage.

- If you're going to fall off the course because you're drifting too far, simply let go of R and you might save yourself.

- Drift around as many corners as you can and get that orange spark boost. The sooner and sharper you can turn during a small turn, the easier it will be to stay on course.

- Don't drift on the last turn on Rainbow Road (unless you REALLY know what you're doing). I always forget this but whenever I do remember I end up actually keeping my 1st place position.
Mastery takes time. I'm still not the MK7 master I aspire to be, but these are some extremely helpful tips that I've learned over my MK7 career that always come in handy. If you have any additional tips or tricks that you'd like me to add, then I'd be more than happy to add the tip to the thread and give you credit.

Happy drifting c:

Yep! I already knew these pointers. Good stuff!

The only reason I would drift on this turn is to ramp off onto the lower portion of the road (right before the finish line). It's not too difficult, but there are plenty of factors that can mess you up (not having a full boost after drift, forgetting to hop, skewed trajectory, ect.) This mini-shortcut saves tons of time... if you can pull it off. It's definitely not worth doing if you're far ahead in 1st place, however.

I already knew everything but one, the one for more air during ramp jump flights! Thanks! Now I know how to get the altitude I need in some levels! Also, just one small pointer and a little something else you forgot to mention about firing/throwing projectiles backwards, while throwing Red Shells backwards, they WON'T home in on a target but rather behave like a Green Shell, but will travel and ricochet far less and that you can throw Fireballs backwards too! Other than that, your guide is really good!

Yes! Thank you, the red shell and fireball projectile information are some good pointers and I'll add it into the guide, and I'm glad you learned something from this thread :)

You're totally right, sometimes I can pull it off but typically it's a very difficult turn that messes me up 9/10 times. Next time I'll make sure I have and do all the things you listed (full boost and hop). I'll add this information to the thread once I practice a bit more and fully understand the turn c:

Collecting coins increases you maximum speed in that race, if you get hit and lose coins your maximum speed will go back down. Grab as many coins and question mark boxes as you can, you can only hold 10 coins ans 1 item but the stuff you take isn't there for others to get. The blue shell are the hardest to avoid, You need to boost away from them just before the strike either with a Mushroom or a expertly timed red/gold drift boost.
