I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips... I just got the game and don't know too much as this is my first MH game. I'm learning Charge Blade and feel decently comfortable with it.

I'm new to Monster Hunter as well, but I can share some tips for you

  • Always eat before going on a quest, eating can give you health and stamina increases as well as elemental resistances and Atk and Def buffs as well, the fresher the ingredients, the better
  • Combine items, there are a lot of helpful items in the game, a lot of which can't be bought in a store; some useful combinations: Blue Mushroom + Herb = Potion, Potion + Honey = Mega Potion; Tranquillizer + Bomb Casing = Tranq Bomb, Trap Tool + Net = Pitfall Trap, Trap Tool + Thunderbug = Shock Trap
  • Once you have access to the Wyporium, use it to multiply items like Honey and Blue Mushrooms, it keeps you from having to go out gathering more often
  • Unless you're building an armor set specifically for gathering, you'll typically want a complete armor set to make the most of the skills you can earn, skills can give you more health, allow you to sharpen your weapon easier or extend your invulnerability when fighting a monster among other things
  • Learn to mount monsters
  • Websites like Kiranico are your friend, don't be afraid of using them to find information on certain items, skills, armor, etc

since @Lios gave some of the more general tips, i'll help you with some stuff for the CB:
  • the block on the charge blade should be only for emergencies, like if a tigrex was charging at you and you aren't able to evade, then use the shield. this rule can change when the shield is charged though.
  • ALWAYS keep your shield charged (press R during an A.E.D). it gives the axe a 20% dmg boost, it raises the guard ability of the shield from a GS to a lance, and it allows you to use guard points, which i'll explain now
  • during the morphing animations (sword to axe/axe to sword) you have a few frames where you hold the shield in front of you. if you get attacked during these frames, you will automatically guard from the attack. it acts as a normal guard if the shield is uncharged, but when charged, it also gives a free phial burst.
  • when the shield is charged, the A.E.D is boosted. the super A.E.D does much more damage and is almost always a KO (with an impact CB) but it uses both the charge and all the phials you have. only use this if you know you'll hit the monster, otherwise hold back on the circle pad and press X during the small animation before the actual attack.
  • the main combos to use are (hold until you see the flash) A+X+X&A in the sword, and X+A (repeated) in the axe.
that's all the main things to know about the CB. some of the skills i would recommend are artillery, guard+1 or +2 (if you plan on using guard points), and sharpness+1.

Another thing, if you're having a lot of trouble with a particular monster, YouTube videos can help you come up with strategies, sets to use against it, etc.

Here's a tip, get in the habit of buying the max amount of potions, mega potions, antidotes, hot drinks, cold drinks, paintballs, null berries, and energy drinks you can carry. Later on in the game, you'll reach high rank quests that start you off in a random part of the map with none of the supplies available from the beginning. If you get in the habit of carrying all the necessities now, those missions won't be so hard to adjust to. Some of these items, like the mega potions, aren't available in the shops, so make sure you have a steady supply of materials to create the items. THIS WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE MUCH EASIER, TRUST ME. Also, you can buy books that give you info on monsters, but most importantly, hidden away with the giant list of books, there are some that increase the amount of items you can carry in your bag, and some that can help increase chances of success for combinations. These are extremely useful to carry.

I noticed you didn't mention the Shield thrust .. should I stop using that...? (A&X after an initial blow. It hits twice when done properly.)

EDIT:
you mentioned it in combos. You didn't go in Def so I didn't notice. Sorry bout that.

I didn't ask but thanks guys, that helped me too :)
I would add to always take with you the BBQ tool, i almost lost one of the first quest because of lack of stamina!

I bought and keep the tool with me. I more often than not use either bow or CB and keep 10 mega potions on me at all times.

Yes, I think I'm on the same level :p didn't try bow yet, I still have a couple of weapons to try out. I like the dual blade or heavy gunbow (not sure of the name i dont play in english ;) ) most so far

One other tip if you're playing online. If you're parent calls you and requires you to leave, DONT JUST GO AFK, MOVE OUT OF THE WAY INSTEAD OF IN FRONT OF THE FRIGGIN MONSTER!!!! OTHERWISE YOU MIGHT MAKE CERTAIN PEOPLE RESENTFUL WHEN YOURE DOING THREE VIRTUES AND LOSE BECAUSE YOU WENT AFK ON THE LAST FREAKING MONSTER!!!!

I play single player. I manage to enjoy myself. Mounting monsters and doing a fully charged enhanced axe A+X is fantastic for making quick work of monsters. On cb

Always use shield thrust to get into quick A.E.D
