I've been wandering about what Pokémon have in store for us next so I thought I'd create a speculation thread for everyone to post their thoughts and theories.
Okay so I'll starts with whether the next game will be another gen 6 game or whether we'll move into a knew phase and start gen 7. I've started by researching a bit and found a slight pattern that might tell us what's next.
From this we can see a pattern of how many sets of games and solitary games have been in each generation: 2, 2, 3, 3, 2, 2(so far). This pattern means that we will move into gen 7 next, this theory is supported by the gap year we're having. The gap year could be to create new mons, enhance graphics ect.
On the flip side this would mean we wouldn't get X/Y2 or Z for quite a few more years. GameFreak is not stupid, with all the hype for a sequel to X/Y there must be a big reason not to make a sequel. To figure this out I looked up how much each game made the company.
This basically shows us that each remake sells less than the original. According to this a remake would make an all time record low for a main series game and considering the gap year a new main series game will boost profits. Of course all of this is theory and if GameFreak is anything they're unpredictable.
Okay now that that's all over ^^ I'll go onto how I think the next years of Pokémon will map out.
2015 - Gap Year
2016 - Gen 7 : This would make sense considering a gap year, I think 3 years is enough for 1 generation considering how fast pace and how high the demand is. Also I don't think gen 6 was a big enough instalment for 3 sets of games.
2017 - Diamond and Pearl remakes : Pretty big hype since ORAS and Sinnoh has only featured in 2 main series games. also it would have been 9 years since D/P had ben released so it would have been time.
2018 - Pokémon X/Y2 : Would be about time for a remake. Think it would fit in nicely with gen 7 and the Zygarde story can be better. I don't think it would be Pokémon Z as I don't think it could stand on it own half a decade after X/Y.

2015 - Gap Year
2016 - Pokémon Z : This would make sense and this is what I think will happen. It helps that X/Y was released so near to it. Zygarde story line will be finned and focused on. It could also be home to new mega evos.
2017 - Gen 7 : I Don't think a single gen could have more than 3 games without loosing its originality so gen 7 is kinda obvious here.
2018 - Diamond and Pearl remakes : Slightly stubborn for D/P remakes. It would make sense as is would have been a full 1o years since the originals.
2019 - Gen 7 remake : continuing with the pattern gen 7 will include 3 sets of games, an older gen remake wouldn't be viable so gen 7 again with an improved plot.
These are just some of my thoughts and ideas, hope you share yours.
