So the new Mario Maker game is out, and I was curious, can you play as other non-Mario characters? I know you can play them in 2D but can you play as them in the "New Super Mario Bros" world thing? Like can you play as Link and have him be in New Super Mario Bros? I'm pretty interested to get this game.

I don't know if you can play as other characters but I do know that the game has been confirmed to have over 30+ amiibo (including link) working with the game. I just hope you can play as them, and if not, It will be cool to have a bonus from them like in hyrule warriors. I hope that mario related amiibo will work.

You can only use the costumes in the Super Mario Bros game style unfortunately.
In Super Mario Bros 3, the Costume Mushroom is replaced with a Tanooki leaf and in Super Mario World, it is a Cape.
In the New Super Mario Bros U edition, it is a propeller mushroom.

Also, DONT waste your money on amiibos because I think all costumes are unlockable in other ways

@superhyperyoshi well It's not wasting your money since you can use all sorts of amiibos In more than one game. I bought my sonic amiibo for smash bros, but now that mario maker confirmed 30+ amiibo supported, I can just use them as a little bonus ingame.

@Kalomaze true, but nobody should buy an amiibo specifically for this game considering how many costumes there are and how much amiibos cost.

There are some costumes that aren't amiibo based that you can unlock or start out with (I'm not gonna spoil them)

That's true as well. I am not buying amiibos for this game which is good. I'm thinking about getting pikachu for smash bros. which is completley worth it since I will have yet another killing amiibo machine :sneaky: Loads of amiibo are going to be compatibile with this :)

Welp, this,I must say,is the thing that is hyping me up the most about the game.Considering Super Mario Maker will be compatible with over 50 amiibo, and the quantity I have as of now, then I can't wait to try out the original Super Mario Bros. with other characters, like Bowser,Pikachu,Wario,Sonic and others in 8-bit form.I know they're just costumes for Mario to use,but still, they're costumes that allow you to appear as other characters that isn't the main mustached guy himself. :D
It's also nice that you get to unlock costumes for some of the current amiibo if you don't have them, which would most likely be the ideal case with rare characters like Villager,Rosalina,Marth,Ness,Little Mac and others.

All the Amiibos are compatible and are playable characters in the game as well as more unlockable mystery Mushroom characters by completing 8 stages from various Mario Maker levels people made around the world. Waluigi, Ashley, and Slippy Toad are just a few of them and there are certainly more for people to unlock. They all have their own crouch animation, running animation, and their own sound effects. You can also add sound effect bocks in Mario Maker so when your character crosses over them they give certain feelings to the game as well as change what you see on the screen and overall it's very good and anyone can enjoy this title. If you don't believe me look for it on Youtube.

Its nice that you can play as other Nintendo characters such as Link, Inklings, and even more. The only down side is that it works like a normal Super Mushroom. You can play as that character, but if you get hit, the costume flies off and you are returned to normal Mario, his starting state without a Super Mushroom.
