For anyone not familiar with Pokemon Card GB2, it is the Japanese-only sequel to a spin off game called Pokemon Trading Card Game for the Gameboy. (Yes, they did indeed make a game based off the card game based off the games.)

Both games are based on the Wizards of the Coast version of the card game, the sequel boasting up to the Team Rocket set, most of the Japanese exclusive vending cards, 15 exclusive Japanese Intro Pack cards, 13 game exclusive cards, 1 Gym Heroes card and a healthy helping of Promotional cards from the time of release.

This sequel has many new features, one amongst them being the Game Corner. Inside the Game Corner is a machine called the Black Box which requires 5 game chips (which can be obtained in the same building) to operate and a maximum of 5 of the same card. Once the cards have been inserted and you leave the building, you'll get a mail notice in your menu giving you 1 new card in return. This card whether you like it or not is yours forever.

But that led me to thinking, just what kind of prizes can you net from the Black Box? So using a copy of the game and a *cough cough*emulator*cough*, I tested a quite a few different cards with the machine and came up with this list:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grass
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5x Ivysaur Lv.26 ----> Ivysaur Lv.26 / Venusaur Lv.67
5x Dark Ivysaur Lv.16 ----> Dark Ivysaur Lv.16 / Dark Venusaur Lv.37
5x Nidoran F Lv.12 ----> Nidoran F Lv.12 / Nidorina Lv.24
5x Nidorina Lv.24 ----> Nidorina Lv.24 / Nidoqueen Lv.43
5x Nidorino Lv.25 ----> Nidorino Lv.25 / Nidoking Lv.48
5x Oddish Lv.21 ----> Oddish Lv.21 / Dark Gloom Lv.21

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fighting
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5x Dark Machoke Lv.28 ----> Dark Machoke Lv.28 / Dark Machamp Lv.30

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colorless
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5x Pidgey Lv.8 ----> Pidgey Lv.8 / Pidgeotto Lv.38
5x Pidgey Lv.10 ----> Pidgey Lv.10 / Pidgeotto Lv.38
5x Rattata Lv.9 ----> Rattata Lv.9 / Raticate Lv.41 / Dark Raticate Lv.25
5x Rattata Lv.12 ----> Rattata Lv.12 / Raticate Lv.41 / Dark Raticate Lv.25
5x Spearow Lv.9 ----> Spearow Lv.9 / Fearow Lv.27
5x Spearow Lv.12 ----> Spearow Lv.12 / Fearow Lv.27
5x Jigglypuff Lv.14 ----> Jigglypuff Lv.14 / Wigglytuff Lv.36
5x Meowth Lv.10 ----> Meowth Lv.10 / Persian Lv.25
5x Meowth Lv.13 ----> Meowth Lv.13 / Persian Lv.28
5x Meowth Lv.15 ----> Meowth Lv.15 / Persian Lv.25
5x Meowth Lv.17 ----> Meowth Lv.17 / Persian Lv.25
5x Doduo Lv.10 ----> Doduo Lv.10 / Dodrio Lv.25
5x Dratini Lv.10 ----> Dratini Lv.10 / Dragonair Lv.33
5x Dratini Lv.12 ----> Dratini Lv.12 / Dragonair Lv.33

What I found upon multiple testings of the same cards is that none of the Pokemon cards give you a single card with 100% certainty. Rather it appears that you'll have a chance of obtaining either the same card you gave 5 of, or getting a better card in the line. The 5x1 trades you see above with two or more Pokemon card rewards is what you have a chance of getting from the machine.

Obviously I can't test all the cards due to time constraints or not having enough cards to test with, but it can be assumed that variant cards to ones tested here like Ivysaur Lv.20 to the above tested Ivysaur Lv.26 would also have a chance of giving the same card in addition to the chance of the better Venasaur Lv.67 card.

Testing Pokemon cards of the last evolution with the Black Box, it appears that the cards given in return are random. For example, 5x Raticate Lv.41 netted a Wigglytuff Lv.36, Chansey Lv.55 and finally another Raticate Lv.41 when testing the tradeoff three times. If anything, the only consistency noted thus far is that the card received will always be the same type, i.e. 5x Normal type cards will net a Normal random, Fire type cards will net a Fire random, etc. Trainer cards are the same, giving out random cards. 5x Energy Removal netted two Clefairy Doll and two Energy Removal cards on 4 different trials.

So all in all, these have been my findings. You might be wondering why I bothered to post this, to which I have two reasons. Firstly, this is out of partial curiosity to see what cards can be obtained from the Black Box in this game since I am currently playing it and there's very little documentation of this game. Secondly, this is insurance in case something goes awry as I plan on pushing this information as a contribution somewhere else at a later date, so this should show who tested said information.
