Pokemon EV training help?

Guys, I've been playing Pokemon for as long as I remember and I still don't understand what EV training is and how to do it. All I know is that it has something to do with breeding and is big in the tournament scene. I'd like to try it but for the life of me I can't figure it out. So can anyone help explain it? Thanks!
 
EV training is a specialized training where you train by battling certain pokemon to increase a certain stats. For example, if you want to use a competitive Chandelure, you would want to max out its Special Attack as much as possible. To do so, you would want to (First get perfect 31 IV in Sp atk, with Modest Nature) and then battle a lot of roselia since they give 2 Special Atk points each. In XY and ORAS, you can check your pokemon's EVs in the Super Training screen. If you plan to EV Train, here's a tip: Have the pokemon you wish to train infected with Pokerus, make it hold a power item (costs BP in battle maison) and have a pokemon that knows sweet scent to attract hordes of the same pokemon to increase a stat's EVs much faster. You get 508 EV Points to use, so it's better to EV Train your Pokemon's stronger stats than weaker ones.

Effort Values is the same thing as evs

So it's basically hunting specific pokemon that help raise the stats that you're looking for stats for and also trying to find (or possibly breed) certain pokemon for certain strengths?
 
I managed to get the power Items from the battle Maison, I'm currently trying to get a Pokémon with Pokerus
