Divergent
Towns Folk
I came across this topic while on Smogon or something and I thought it was really interesting. Basically it's what each generation of Pokemon's designs are categorized as. If that doesn't make sense I'll give you my thoughts and examples in a bit.
Each generation or group of Pokemon are unique to a specific region and they can be categorized into a speciic theme or idea. These could include urbanization or prehistoric, basically anything you can use to describe most or all of the Pokemon in a generation.
Here are my thoughts and ideas:
Kanto - For me it's slightly difficult to comment on this one because I didn't start in Kanto but I did have a look at the Pokemon and region and here are my thoughts. Prehistoric and wild. So where this comes along is that a lot of the Pokemon are based upon dinosaurs or extinct mammals. If you look at the three starters you can see that one is clearly a dragon whose preevolutions look like little dinosaurs. One is a turtle (whose evolutionary line dates back over two hundred and fifty million years). Lastly the last is a ornithischia (a category of dinosaurs who are beaked herbivores (and yes I did have to go on wikipedia to find the name)). From only the three starters we can see the prehistoric correlations. Other Pokemon such as Kabuto, Omastar, Aerodactyl, Golem and Lapras also share these distinct dinosaur like qualities. Throughout the entire generation we don't really see many modern animals so I think the theme sits quite well.
Johto - (I think this is generation 2?) For this generation on Pokemon I would say these are beasts. All the Pokemon are based off of current animals. Also, not many of the towns are well built up so we can see that there is a complete balance and unity between people and Pokemon. There are crocodiles, sheep, frogs, dragonflies, monkeys, the list really just keeps going on. You can really see the balance that this generation brought to the games. Unity instead of being scared of Pokemon.
Hoenn - Ok this one kinda sucks so I'll keep it short. The lasting impression I had from Hoenn is water. There is just so much water! Maybe it was done purposefully to mirror how large our oceans are. With an influx of water types being introduced mirrored how undiscovered out oceans are and how many hidden animals are there? I don't know about this one, I could use your opinions.
Sinnoh - I don't need to look at the Pokemon, the region or anything for this one! This is my region, my love, my life (OK, bit extreme but oh well). The theme for this region is legend and creation. The reasoning behind this is the amount of legendary's and the sheer power of them. The creator of everything in the Pokemon universe. The creator of time, space, antimatter. The whole region is shrouded in mystery and had legends that are so old some are lost to history. You can see this even in the starters; an armored emperor penguin. A living mass of land that holds habitats for other Pokemon. A dual offensive fighting monkey. There is just so much history in this region, its amazing (Yes I'm a gen 4 equivalent of a genwunner)
Unova - Urbanization is the theme here. It shows where instead of the unity coming from the side of Pokemon, it shows it coming from humans. Johto's counterpart if you will. So basically I mean that the Pokemon are started to adapt to modern society, the busy cities and construction sites. Trubbish is a perfect example of this. It is our rubbish. Vanillite is an ice cream, Litwick is a candle. It is there to show that Pokemon are more modern than just ancient beasts. They can live with us in our territory.
Kalos - This is the region that none of the sites I saw this kind of content of commented about. But after having a little look I found balance as the theme. Just look at the legendary's , they keep balance. Just as the Pokemon; we see urbanized Pokemon such as Klefki, medieval urbanization of Aegislash, Prehistoric animals in Tyrantrum, magic is Delphox, modern animals in Greninja. The range of Pokemon really cover all spectrum's and compliment the ideals of the legendary Pokemon of the region.
