Pokemon X/Y Game Chat?

Does anyone know anything about how this feature works?
 
Basically if someone from your friends list is online at the same time as you, you can chat to them. You can also chat to them during battles or during trading. However, I have one problem with game chat and thats when you are in normal game chat you can only talk to the person you can't play the game or add more people to it
 
It's basically one on one voice communication with a friend you're playing with. I disabled it because half the time we don't even talk and you just hear random clicking and obnoxious background noises. I do remember using it when X and Y first came out and I used it when battling and trading with some irl friends, but then after that it just kinda stopped, and became useless.
