The entire roster for Super Smash Bros. 3DS / Wii U has been unveiled since the handheld title's release in Japan last week, and with it, fans of past iterations in the franchise were left wondering: where are the Ice Climbers?

In his latest bi-weekly Famitsu column, Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai divulged the true reason behind the frosty duo's absence in Smash 4. As many feared, the 3DS' limitations were the deciding factor in the unexpected character omission.

According to Sakurai, the Ice Climbers functioned properly in the Wii U version of the game, but the two hammer-wielding warriors brought forth some issues when on Nintendo's handheld console. Because the Ice Climbers haven't had a new game in their franchise for quite some time now, Sakurai felt they weren't of the highest priority and decided to cut them once the 3DS troubles emerged.

The Ice Climbers weren't the only Super Smash Bros. veterans to be given the boot in the latest installment, as both Wolf and Lucas did not make a return either. We can only hope Sakurai reveals the reason behind their exclusion as well.

And that's now that we can complain about Nintendo putting (sometimes) not powerful enough hardware in their handhelds.
That's sad, because those twos were fun, even if I wasn't an Ice Climbers player. And I think I understand Sakurai's choice to totally cut them from both versions because:
1) 3DS Players would have been disappointed to see that the Ice Climbers were exclusive to the Wii U
2) 3DS Players would have been even more disgusted if they were in the game and then, *poof!* the game becomes N3DS-only
3) Sakurai said it himself: he doesn't like the idea of DLC. Thus, no Ice Climbers DLC.

So yep, it's sad that they didn't made it to the roster, but I think that Nintendo is to blame on this one for putting insufficient hardware in their handhelds, and not Sakurai. He and the development team surely did everything possible to try to put them in the game.

Oh well, Ice Climbers had only one game anyway, ice climbers was a doomed franchise from the start

This is true. It was a good game, but Nintendo didn't try another Ice Climbers game. They only kept game-world-changing stuff like Mario and Zelda from that era.

Although if Duck Hunt Dog can be in the game... :p

then why'd he make a mewtwo dlc????

I agree. If Duck Hunt works for the game, why not Ice Climbers?

I think the best solution for them would be turning the two Ice Climbers into one. In the char selection, we would have 4 forms for the girl and 4 forms for the boy, as with Male and Female Wii Fit Trainer.

Sakurai added Mewtwo DLC to test the waters if DLC is okay with smash bros. That is why.

I wonder if the New Nintendo 3DS has enough capacity to handle the Ice Climbers. If it can handle Xenoblade Chronicles then it should handle them as well.

As for Wolf and Lucas they were probably cut due to being semi-clones and not being "relevant". Though why they weren't added as alt skins ala Alph is beyond me, though perhaps the relevancy argument works for that as well since Alph was part of the latest Pikmin game.

I find this kind of sad that Ice Climbers didn't make a return to Super Smash Bros 4 and though I wasn't any Ice Climbers main or anything I would have loved to try out and enjoy playing different characters at all time . I don't really see a problem in Smash DLC but let's hope that the Mewtwo DLC will work well and some of the characters will might comeback . I also enjoyed playing Lucas and Wolf :(

Because even though the Duck Hunt Duo is a duo, the AI works like a single character, where the Ice Climbers used/required two AIs.

It can't handle Xenoblade without making it horribly disgusting.
And, I think that Sakurai, unlike the guys at Nintendo, is smart enough to know that if he decides to give more love to N3DS owners than 3DS owners, that will end up coming back in his face sooner or later. Plus, even though he tends to be a troll sometimes, he do respects Smash players.

then why'd he make a mewtwo dlc????
Because Mewtwo is a simple AI character, unlike the Ice Climbers, that, like I said, requires two different AIs, and thus, more processing power. Plus, the Mewtwo DLC was supposed to be a test about social gaming, something like this (he said it himself)

A lot of Smash fans didn't like Ice Climbers anyway. I thought they were great, but good things must come to an end - as they are no longer in the series. At this point the many fans who didn't like Ice Climbers realize that: with them gone, It's kinda depressing. The Ice Climbers were iconic to the Super Smash Bros Series and put a sizable impression on the overall gameplay of Melee and Brawl.

To be honest ice climbers were annoying mostly when it get that smash i think it was called that but i always love the animation for it so for some people they think they are op (over power) or they think they're too weak or annoying.

Would it be easier to make the Ice Climbers a single character like letting Nana be a alt, and changing there b up move?

  • #20
that would be less annoying for most players and i might be happy with just 1 character I mean like why did they create 2? thats just op right there
