Short hopping?

So I played the Smash Bros. demo and got good with Mario (probably the best of the demo characters) so I was wondering - how do I do short jumps? Played a friend and I got rekt. He used short hops and Mario's down+a...I can't time that for my life. Should I use x to jump when I do it? Or what? Appreciate any help, thanks!!
 
Yep use x. As far as possible try not to use tap jumping. In fact when you get the full game turn tap jumping off. Using x gives you the precision that tap jumping does not.
And the best character in the demo is link!

Thanks! And about Link...ehh he's the second best. And as far as pacman goes, is he really that bad? Maybe he's just different to play.
 
I see some short hopping a lot in videos but I never use it lol. I can change how fast I drop well but short hopping looks different. I don't even think it's worth it though since I can get the best angle of attack from the NNE/NNW sides of the character. Perhaps that's why I think Mega Man is the best for that reason. Link's isn't OP from my experience of facing those CPUs that rarely use air attacks, use multiple projectiles, use moves that leave them vulnerable like his Up smash and all. His Dash attack though is something else.
 
Best character is MEGAMAN in the demo,anyone who thinks not is out of their minds,

THAT DOWN AIR DOE.
 
I don't like to use x when jumping. It just doesn't feel right to me. And the best character is the demo is MEGAMAN. On the side note, I just love how the narrator shouts Megaman's name when you select him. It's so epic haha.

I agree but for short hops it's much more reliable, as I've found out first hand. Up is good for jumping when you're off stage I think.
