Absolutely. Even with the new one coming out, the old ones are still worth it, too.

Ok thanks

Fire Emblem Awakening is a great game. The gameplay is engaging and as challenging as you need, the graphics are beautiful, the story is great, the music is really good, the cutscenes look good and make sense (no fillers) and it is really replayable, especially since you can also try for a harder mode. The only reason to not buy it would be if you have a tight budget. With Fire Emblem Fates coming out so soon I would wait for that one in that case. Or wait for the price of Awakening to plummet (that happens a lot when a new game to series comes out). But Awakening is everything you´d expect and a whole bunch more.

Played every game in the series and I've beaten most of them. I'd recommend checking out Awakening: it was created specifically to be a new entry point into the series. Fire Emblem for GBA was the first title the world outside Japan got, and is also a good entry point. Path of Radiance is more or less the best in the series, but it's crazy expensive now last I checked.

While I recommend Awakening, it's not without its flaws. It's a very character-based game. Compared to the rest of the series, its plot is lacking and you won't find much of a political intrigue the rest of the series does well with. This does detract from the game, but the characters are entertaining enough for it not to be a big issue.

Awakening is also incredibly easy except in its highest difficulty level, which is less hard and more broken. This won't be a problem for your purposes, though.

If I had to rank the series, Awakening would place fairly low, but this isn't a common opinion and I wouldn't hold that opinion if I didn't have experience with the rest of the series. It's clear that Awakening is meant to be an entry title, and it's probably the best one for it.

True that, so if anyone wanted to get along with FE series, Awakening would be best to try first (or event collect). The story is light and heartwarming, and while you're considering buying FE Fates next year, this game is perfect as a starter. We got Shin Kobayashi (Kindaichi) as FE Fates writer, so expect it to be something more complicated.

I've barely played the majority of the games in the series (2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13) and while I mostly echo these thoughts very strongly, I would actually say Fire Emblem (7) on the GBA / Wii U VC is a better place to start with the series.

Awakening does help prepare you for Fates next year better in the sense it's the same engine, but I feel FE7 is better at getting you into the mindset for Fire Emblem, because its system provokes you to think more strategically (eg. rescuing has its ups an downs whereas Pair Up just eases it for the player).

It also has legitimate difficulty (most notably) in its hardest mode, but it's actually beatable just by playing the game, whereas Lunatic(+) mode practically forces you to buy DLC or cling to Frederick throughout the entirety of the run.

And it's probably cheaper, too.

[Intelligent thoughts on FE7.]
Oh, I don't disagree with you at all. FE7 is more in line with true Fire Emblem as well, but to a younger kid in this generation the game might seem a bit dated. Awakening is also indicative of the future of the series, like it or not. I'm not happy to see that Fire Emblem departed from what it used to be since I love almost everything from the start to RD, but this is what it is now. I think it might actually be better (these days) to play Awakening and branch out from there.

When you have to buy DLC to win, it feels like pay-to-play mobile games, imo :p

That's where FE:A level design is broken. And maybe that's why in FE:Fates that Lunatic+ difficulty is erased.

If you were to buy one you can get my favorite fire emblem game for really cheap... its fire emblem shadow dragon for the ds
it is my favorite not only fire emblem game but ds game of all time so i think you should really check it out. Prince Marth is my favorite character just like many others but for me he has a special place in my heart. which is why im so mad that i cant get his amiibo because it is so rare expensive and hard to find online... oh well i guess i am just going to have to settle with pikachu. Anyways i definetly think you should get fire emblem!

This is a great series if you are a tactical person. I picked up the game simply because I had the money at the time and took a break from my regular schedule of games and started Awakening.
