I'm curious to hear your opinions on this heavily controversial subject. Perhaps as controversial as Melee's gameplay itself. I will respond based upon your attack method in defense of the plaintiff being the Final Smash itself. Here's the evidence you have to work with and you may add more upon request by the judge and jury.

The Smash ball is a great underdog item, but I say no to any items. In competitive play, It gives one person an unfair advantage and isn't fair at all.

Smash ball is a great item helps because it can help tip the scales and gives you a second chance even though having on stock higher dosent give you the match though if you have a lead and use it gives you a flawless finish for your opponent and most times people don't go for it either that or fight each other to get it and flys away or knock it to far away from ground

Smash ball should not be banned in any smash game. It makes the players immediatly fight for the smash ball, and you have to choose, should I get it or trap the other players? I know people who play on the defense side and try to hit the players while some players like to go for the smash ball. Its fantastic, I like how the smash ball creates a lot of tension.

I'm with @sonicandres1. Just having items can give someone an unfair advantage. Bomb-Ombs, POW Blocks, Lip Sticks, Smash Crates, anything can tip the balance and give you the advantage. Use Mario, toss a Crate, throw an enemy towards it, and neutral special the crate. That's how I once won a Classic match once. Better to have people rely on their own skills with a character to win and leave items in the non-competitive For Fun mode.

I agree with @sonicandres1 and @Elchronic Maelstrom. Items pop at random times and random places.

So ok, maybe you're a master at throwing bombs and capsules, and maybe you're a god at trapping people in your Final Smash... But remember that you got your bomb/capsule/SmashBall thanks to luck. Maybe it could have popped just in front of someone who would pick it up unwillingly instead and you would have lost. See that "maybe" ? That's what is not good. You should be able to decide if you win or lose according to your skill, not rely on maybes.

And I don't even think items are fun in fun mode. Except when we make them a lot less random already by only having one kind of items (and not pokeballs) like bumpers. Otherwise, we have fun in other ways with my friend, like doing invisible Melees in teams (you have no clue where you are, and when you do, you often kick your teammate because you either didn't see them or thought they were an opponent) or all playing Ganondorf, or doing Falcon Punch only matches, or playing on Pokefloats (which is not random, just stupid), etc... or even mixing some of those, like invisible Melee in teams in full Ganondorf, to add to the confusion, and on PokeFloats so that you can die by yourself just by not knowing where you were.
