So I live in a sleepy town in Pennsylvania. One of the very few people here that actually play video games here, and an even smaller percentage that play Smash. I've been playing this since I was 4, when Melee came out, and man, did I flippin' love it! Played everyday for the next like 4 years and played it here and there afterwards. I never really stopped playing it and I got pretty confident with my skills so I thought about going to this game night that the library here holds and holy crap man, I was unstoppable. I thought I as like the greatest player ever! I went on 1 vs. 3 matches there and won with 3 extra lives, and I felt so good about myself. And then.... Smash 4 came out. Got it for Christmas, love it, still play it, and for the first time, I tried online... Now first I tried "With Anyone" And I did alright. Won more matches than I lost, so I was like "Man I have to be as good as competitive players, right?" WRONG. Played "For Glory" 1v1 and got my butt beat so bad.... It kinda destroyed me for a day or two, admittedly XD. I was like, devastated. I hardly touched the guy, he kept grabbing and grabbing and absolutely kicking my butt, like nothing I've ever seen before, not here in sleepy ol' PA. And uh, I just realized that maybe I'm not good, but maybe everyone that doesn't live here is excellent and are just gifted or something, I don't know XD. But I just kinda wanted to say this to some peeps, knowing this is a friendly community and you know, that someone could relate.

Hope it's not weird to write a paragraph on this site like I just did o.e

I think that your smash skills are probably good but I think that it depended on who exactly you were battling with in that For Glory match . There are many people who spam certain characters and that is typically annoying , I really suggest maybe sharpening your skills better and continuously before trying another match . Some characters are really OP like Sonic which you really have to pay good attension to their movements because he is quick . Hope that helps and it is just probably getting used to the new Smash:thumbsup:

I know I how you feel...I often play by myself and I do great against computers on max level, but when I play with others I don't do so well and it makes me feel kind of sad....and it makes me feel worse when they boast at how great they are.

I often neglect the game afterwards because I help but feel bad.

That would depend on the time you had played a Smash Bros game. I have noticed that when I stop playing for a few days, my skills start to wear down! I guess that is why practicing is important!

Initially yes. Initially I felt horrible because I'd lose every single online match. I'd do pretty well against the computer but I would be easy to beat for online opponents. However, I practised shielding actively and now I'm much better at it.
As @generalmeme72 said, the more regularly you play it, the better you stay at it. If I play after a week or so, I need a couple of matches to get into my groove again.

I know that feel bro. I was playing lvl 9 cpus and beating them but when i went online i got crushed. Pretty sure that my winrate is only like 20--30 percent maybe lower. I got a bit better after playing the game for a while but still losing online matches :p.

Dude, I totally get it. Most people who do Glory 1v1 are reeaaaally really good players. It's rare that you see an average player on GLory, and they always get raped. I feel like it mostly depends on practice, especially stuff that is really close and helps you learn how to avoid grabs better, but still..

If I could interject...
I'd be so bold to say that the pros are on a completely different level than say me or you OP.

The pros that go to local tournaments and make videos on YouTube about tactics and competitive play are really just THAT good but that's not to say people who play For Glory couldn't beat them or even you or I!

As everyone has implied, it's all about practice and if there's one thing you have to learn about competitive Smash, it's the metagame and Advanced Techniques that go along with it. ATs this time around in Smash 4 however are normally character specific, so if you're trying to pickup a character then I implore you to find out their bread and butter moves and get practicing!

Good luck, pal!

Don't worry, 1-on-1 For Glory is Marth/Falco learns to grab simulator 2015. I thought I was also getting like, even better at Smash lately since my GSP was getting over the 2M bar in most of the modes, and oh, I was just wrong.

2-on-2 can at least pretend to be fun because you have somebody to help you out, and most of the people in that mode are relatively average; while 1-on-1 is just utter chaos. Is it fun to see the same players perform the same grab->roll/shield/counter->smash action loop ? No.

That'd why I don't even bother to touch or even make eye-contact with that mode. It's so full of wanna become the next ZeRo/M2K guys that it becomes boring or just infuriating.

So, no worries; it's not just you: it's the whole mode that's messed up. Play For Glory Smash or 2-on-2 instead. You'll get way more fun, and you'll face less Grabbers.

And @Spinny: Yes, training is a thing, and staying "in shape" (<- in the sense of not letting your skills rust) is also good. But sadly, I've came to the conclusion that's not enough to be able to stand just a few minutes in the sad unskilled button-mashing vicious cycle called "For Glory 1 VS 1".

Wait, you know what they are doing yet deliberately fall for it?
Why not punish them for being so painfully easy to read? The mode is definitely not all it's cracked up to be but the players themselves are not the main reason at all, I believe it's how Sakurai went about implementing For Glory and GSP rather than doing a simple ranking system like in Capcom's Ultra Street Fighter 4 or Namco Bandai's Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

I honestly believe that if that was what the Smash development team delivered instead of that amalgamation we have now, the online play of For Glory would be a MUCH more enjoyable experience because you'd be playing against people who actually are your skill level. But that's neither here nor there since it's a what-if at this point, but tell me, do you somehow resent the play style that people have online despite it being called "For Glory" and being implied to be a competitive mode?

That's what they mostly do. But since the lag is huge and that the hitboxes/priorities for the attacks are messed up 75% of the time in that mode, I just can't do anything. And yes, a ranking system/leaderboards thingy would have been really better than just numbers. And in a fact, it would have been way cooler if the server would have taken those in consideration for matchmaking.

And yes, I do sometimes resent how people want to play the game.

I can relate when you speak about the amount of lag in Smash 4, however I will always agree with the statement that it's a massive improvement from Brawl. I think, and this is coming from someone with experience playing other stable fighting games on the market, that Nintendo/Sakurai/the Smash 4 development team/whoever dropped the ball on providing a crisp, entertaining and enjoyable online experience overall.

The game itself is solid, and I love it being my second favorite Smash game but I will agreed with you and say [if that's what you're implying] that this game's online is MILES from where it should be in this day and age. We've got games like USF4 and Battlefield 4 running fine online, why Nintendo can't deliver this in one of their prime games as well is beyond me.

Level 9 cpus has their own skill level, but human players are different because they have minds of their own. That's also my case. I always get my tail owned in smash 1 on 1 but I never gave up. In fact I try harder and harder Until I become pro with my character.
