Before I start this let me get this out of the way. Im a HUGE sonic fan. I own most of the main series games and find them fun. My personal bias may be in this post but i hope this shed's light on what sonic boom is to the sonic fanbase and the internet. Is this a review? No but it's rather my own personal thoughts on this game. Before i start another thing to note *I don't have this game*. I am basing my opinion of gameplay and playthroughs I've seen. I do not think this game is worth the 60 dollar price tag. Anyway lets get started!
I remember coming home from school that day and seeing this image. It was all over gaming sites and many people were confused. Are they rebooting the sonic series?,Why do these characters look different?, The year of sonic? It was all so much to take in. At first i was like "WHAT THE HECK DID THEY DO WITH KNUCKLES!?!" After that i questioned are they really rebooting sonic. I mean they were on a roll after sonic generations and even though lost world was step backwards I thought it was ok. All these questions would not get answered till February 7th when the announcement trailer was released. Even more questions were made that day too and the sonic fanbase was split. (Not a big surprise though considering the sonic fanbase. ) Personally i was excited for this game. Multiple playable characters again,Wide open areas to explore and the game is being developed by BigRedButton who had ex-Naughty Dog employees, some who worked on great games like jak and daxter. Needless to say i was hyped for this game. Along the way more videos were introduced explaining the game and a tv show got announced. The game was looking to be a great success. For reference to how the game look im gonna show you 2 videos. One of the hub world and one of development.
Game look great right. On November 11 we would finally see the game in action.
I wanted to get this game but Super Smash Bros was on my priority list. I started watching a playthrough on youtube instead. What i saw was a surprise. The game Looked a lot different from what I've seen. Slow down in speed sections,Bland combos and no run button. OH THE HORROR. Even so i still thought the game was if anything ok and even then i think im being generous. The fan base was torn. The game being called names such as sonic 14,Sonic 06 2.0 and some were even saying it was worse than Sonic 06. What happened!? Well for more on that there is another post in our community made by T-Player Guy (http://forum.3dspedia.com/blog/the-development-of-sonic-boom-rise-of-lyric.106/) And one made by a member of the website "The Sonic Stadium" (http://www.sonicstadium.org/2014/11/the-spin-sonic-boom-what-happened-part-1/) Both are worth a read in my opinion. The purpose of this post is to tell of my personal thoughts of the game. I think these sources would do a better job explaining the development than i would. Now back to the topic at hand...
Well this game was certainly a surprise to me. All that excitement gone and to see this product. It kinda upsetting seeing sonic back at the bottom,Especially right after he came back from it. First of all this game had a development of 3 years so it really has no excuse. The western take on sonic was a failure and it was tough being a sonic fan around that point for me. Seeing at every corner someone making fun of sonic is kinda disheartening. Imaging seeing people saying mario should die you know. That would be depressing and that kinda how i felt. This does not excuse the fact that the game is bad. And sure you can bring up "This game is for kids" but kids should be introduced to games of low quality. The game could have greatly benefited form a run button considering the large hub worlds making the game slow paced. BigRedButton (which i will refer to as BRB if i bring them up again) stated that this game would be different from the Main series sonic games but if you main character is named "SONIC" i would expect him to go fast even if he if its not during a speed section. The combat is dull and from what I've seen of just press the same button most of the time. Heck one of my friends just throws the enemies of the stage and kills them instantly. On the topic of enemies they are also very dull. They are really just some generic robots with no really defining traits other than color. The dialogue can get annoying at bits (LOOK AT ALL THOSE RINGS,THESE TRACKS WERE BUILT FOR ME) but it never really bothered me. The hub worlds are dull also. Its like BRB didnt even try with them. They look drastically different from he final product. THIS:
The spin-off series that had promise.

BOOMING SUCCESS OR BUST
MY THOUGHTS
Does not look like this (credit to sonic stadium for the image and video made by cobanermani456)
Do you see my point. It hard to believe this game was made in Cryengine3. The game is also filled with glitches such as characters falling off a 2d plane. With even more problems in the game witch you can find by just watching playthroughs i still think the game is ok. Is it worth the full price. NO NOT AT ALL. I think the game achieved what it did. BRB did say the target audience are little kids up to the age of 10 and i think its gonna do that. Its upsetting this game will sell to children and they do deserve better. I dont even plan on getting this game even if im a huge sonic fan and it makes me upset to know sonic is back at the bottom. There is a ray of hope though. This is a spin off serires made by another company. Sonic team is working on a new sonic game and is it good? Only time will tell and i hope it is! Anyway thanks for reading this. Any thoughts on my retrospective? Comment below. See you guys soon my fellow 3dspedia members!
SEE YOU SOON!
