Do you think that in the back alley where that girl is those things that look like Mario mushrooms are a reference to a power up in a up coming Mario game. Maybe perhaps Super Mario Galaxy 3's new power up.

Spyke isn't a girl, he's a guy. The mushrooms are actually shells, despite the way they look. They can only be obtained through splatfests and are used to re-roll/add abilities to clothes your inkling wears. The shells in splatoon were likely inspired by the modern mushroom design, but are totally unrelated.

Hopefully I didn't splat you too hard.
