Honestly the new Tourney Mode in SSB4 has its ups and downs, but I feel I should directly point them out.
- Firstly, the little communities that are apparently considered "tournaments". They're just like Mario Kart 7 communities. Not actual tournaments, just crappy groups that people can compete in to be number one. Let alone, you can't even 1v1 in those. They're all FFA matches. In addition to that, you have to wait almost two full minutes once you join one to give other people time to join. So you almost have like, no way out of not doing a FFA match.
- Regular tournaments. Not that bad, I suppose. I rate 7/10. There's a few things that irk me about it though. Firstly, waiting. Not to sound like a huge impatient prick here, but honestly waiting for a tourney to start is annoying. At the very least, they could have gave you the training CPU that you see before you enter For Glory matches. That, or atleast give us the ability to leave the waiting room so we can go play a couple rounds of FG while we wait.
To actually go in depth about certain tourney types, most of them (merely 75%) are annoying For Fun tourneys. Most are FFA's, but there's a couple 1v1 For Fun tourneys that aren't the worst. The other tourneys are For Glory tourneys which can consist of FFA's or 1v1s (No teams, sadly).
Speaking of For Glory tourneys, the biggest thing that makes me mad is the win criteria. While I honestly prefer stock matches over timed matches as much as the next guy, I absolutely can't stand the stock matches for this. First off, you only get three minutes with two stocks, compared to normal 1v1 For Glory mode, where you get five minutes.
But it doesn't stop there. While you have to hurry and win within three minutes, there's also the event of time running out. The tiebreaking system is the worst thing about this tourney mode as a whole. Honestly, I would have been fine with cheapo Sudden Death, and I even would have been fine with "lower percentage wins" like in Melee, BUT NO.
Oh no, what's apparently better to Sakurai in the event that time runs out is pretty much "whoever is the most active player wins the match". You could be on 0% to your opponent's 135% and still lose the match if they got more kills than you. If the number of kills in the same, it goes to whoever gave more damage the whole match. Unfair. May as well just make it a timed match.
Now, from what I hear, Nintendo plans on starting their own grand tourneys soon. Let's see how bad this will turn out.
I'm pretty disappointed in the tourney mode as a whole. Other small reasons include the fact that you can't even make offline tourneys, the fact that you have 40 seconds to choose a character when your tourney doesn't start for another 20 minutes or something, the fact that you can't save replays, and the fact that it doesn't show the sandbag's damage while you're training.
I rate 3/10. What are your thoughts on this?
