Now, many of you are going to read this title and say "how dare he insult my smash brethren!!!!", but before you fire off your angry comments please understand I love the smash bros series (not counting brawl) to no end. If anything, this is good. Why?
-the fire emblem series never had a game released in America until SSBM came out, which brought the characters to america for the first time, which got the attention of us US fans, and the fire emblem spiked in popularity 4 years after brawl, which featured high tier character Marth and fan favorite ike

-kid Icarus, a series that had been dead for nearly 20 (18-19 to be exact) was suddenly revived when brawl came out and introduced pit to the fans, 4 years after the release of brawl pit starred in his new game kid Icarus uprising despite a dead fanbase. The game was very popular. Smash4 featured 3 characters from said game, including pit, and now there is speculation about a new kid Icarus game

In my opinion, the Super Smash Bros. series is a bridge for advertising, not exactly an excuse. Nevertheless, the way they advertise characters (and its games) through this game is A LOT fun. I study Marketing, and although I'm not an expert, I can say it's a relatively innovative way of advertising. Nintendo impacts your feelings through the excitement of this game, which leads you to desire to know the story behind the characters. It's awesome!

Editing title for your reasoning, thanks.

Yes, it does advertise all the franchises the characters are taken from in a way, but it's a really fun way to advertise nonetheless. Besides, there doesn't seem to be a lot of focus on the characters' franchises in-game apart from the stages. It doesn't go, "Hey, this guy is from KI: Uprising. Go out and buy it now!" I'm pretty sure that if I was a casual gamer, I'd never have known what games R.O.B. or Robin were from. Besides, it's more fun for me to play with characters I do know and whose games I've already played :cat:

I completely agree it's marketing. I mean, their Smash direct with Corrin. What for ? No one knows him, no one would have asked for him. Well, the difference is that now, everyone knows him, wants him because he is OP and is curious about his game...

Now, I don't really care, it's a fun game, and even with advertising, I only buy games I like :p
For example, I often play Lucina on Smash 4, and main Falco on Melee, well I still never played any Fire Emblem nor Starfox game.
