Ok I think a lot of us heard the word "tech" a lot when watching smash tournaments or playing with highly skilled players. Some of you may not know what teching means in Smash, so I'll just briefly explain it.

So essentially, teching in smash is basically any button input you can use to avoid bouncing on the ground or off a wall or the stage when falling or getting hit. You may notice that when some people edge guard, they like to hit their opponents towards the lower part of the stage because if their opponent doesn't tech then they'll bounce straight off the wall and instantly lose a stock. This is something you want to avoid from happening, so when you get hit what's your best option? Air dodge. You need to press the air dodge button at least 20 frames before hitting the wall in order to avoid getting the bounce effect. So if you get launched toward the stage just dodge before hitting the wall and you'll be fine on your recovery.

And that's about all there is to the basics of teching, pretty simple once you get the skill for it down.

Lol, seems like you learnt quite fast what I told you here :p
But yeah, I can't agree more, thanks for making a full topic about that.

Lol yea the other time i didn't know what the right word to say was for that control measure. I've practiced teching a lot on one of those custom stages with lava surrounding all the walls around the main stage, helps a lot.

I didn't even know that existed. Interesting. =P

It sounds difficult. >.<

Not at all. Just play in a map with walls (like the MGS one in Smash Flash or Temple in Melee) and try to tech everywhere. It's a lot easier to do than L-cancelling, wavedashing (I mean wavedashing usefully) or other techniques like that.

Yeah Teching can save you from a stock but after the tech you can be wide open for such an attack.
Although this rarely happen so no need to worry about it. Teching from a wall is pretty difficult to time though, since there is a delay before a spike or another move.

As well as 6 frame delay before you get your input in anyways, which I think is present in both 3DS and Wii U versions. It's especially noticeable in local play and I think that also messes people up online. You really need to get a feel for the 6 frame lag so you can have some sort of advantage but you still have to read your opponent to as they can put in inputs as you put in inputs.

yea lots of people get tech confused with just dodging and just spamming. And combos. They be like look at this combo i made this an awesome tech! But this is a cool thread to really show what tech is and the true meaning of it and people should use this word often and it is use often. But this is like a thread for rookie/ mid smashers. If you wanna learn to tech you should go on youtube and learn some techs
