When I was little, my dad gave me an old gameboy. I loved that purple piece of plastic to death.. literally... xD
But regardless of that old gameboy, we can get Mario 1-3 for the 3DS! Woo! So to go down memory lane, I recently bought all three to see if I could beat them and try to compare them to the recent Mario games. My results:
Super Mario Bros.: This was the first Mario game! It is much more primitive than what we are used to. The side scrolling is more off than I remember lol you can only go forward, never back. The colors are retro, needless to say, I beat it in 16 minutes. 8 worlds with 4 stages, pretty basic stuff
Super Mario Bros. 2: Ahhh throwing turnips, who doesn't love that? So most of us are used to jumping on Goombas and squishing them, but oh no, not for this Mario! Now we get to pelt pumpkins and turnips and Goombas... and these snake thingies. This is the first appearance of our beloved Birdo (suspected to be Yoshi's gf) Anyway, I haven't beat it yet because of the cursed quicksand!
Super Mario Bros. 3: You thought that was it? Nope! Here comes the third one. This is my favorite of the three. Bringing back jumping on Koopas and Boom Booms, you also don't have to throw turnips! This one introduces more of a kingdom feel as you can explore on a track.
All in all, the oldies are great! Not as graphically cool as the Mario Galaxy's and not as history based as Paper Mario and Yoshi's Island, but Nintendo had to start somewhere! Besides a few retro games for a few buck?? Worth it to me :)

You should really try Super Mario Bros.2: The Lost Levels! It's practically the Japanese version of the game, but it's how a Mario game should be, impossible to beat! It's really frustrating, but an amazing game!

I saw a review for it on YouTube! Looks really fun and challenging :) I've been contemplating about buying it, but I'm still not sure.. as it was... the removed levels from our games because it's so hard XD

The international releases of SMB2 are actually a localization of the game called Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic with the difference that the sprites were altered to fit the Mario characters!
