Well, all of us are thinking wrong things of the console and forgot the good ones...

This version is just for kids, because they need a console that don't break when if hit the floor and also the 3D can be dangerous for them...

Also, it will be more easy for parents give the console to their children, because is more easy to buy (cheaper) and also isn't dangerous or delicate like the real 3DS.

Why 2DS then?
A safe console for kids when they start to play Pokemon X/Y.

They say this is for kids, but that plastic they use looks really cheap, though I can't say that is for certain till I see it closer.

A cheap way to play 3DS games without buying a 3DS. Honestly, it sounds like a money ploy to me. I grew up on consoles probably not "intended for younger audiences." Kids are too sheltered now a days, and Nintendo seems a bit money hungry.

If you ask me Nintendo has forsaken their old hard game self and is trying to hard with this family fun stuff. Change the console name to something good, give us hardcore games and don't go cheap with somethings like the 2DS.

I have mixed views but overall to my surprise I am seeing positive reactions to this. like a friend of mine was saying to me, in the end it is another option so more people can get the console and play Nintendo games. It hasn't been a handheld console this cheap since the DSi, so it may be worth it for some people.

For me it is redundant, other than the prince, as the original 3DS has the parent thing to turn off the 3D effect and the bar to manipulate it any time. So I don't feel it is bringing anything new to the table, still, economic console will make it possible to reach more people and that in itself can be good. After all, the 2DS may be a temporary measure for some while they save for a 3DS / 3DS XL.

I don't get why the 2DS is getting all this hate.

If you don't like the design of this and would rather add the extra $40 and buy a 3DS, all this means is that you aren't part if the audience Nintendo is targeting. And trust me, there is most likely a large audience interested in this.

If you wanted a 3DS without the 3D and that still looked good to you, then buy a regular 3DS and turn off the 3D.

Only problem I have with this is that some kids that wanted a 3DS will get trolled by parents thinking the 2DS is safer.

I can't really see anyone buying the 2DS instead of, as @dilawer said, a used 3DS - and disable the 3D in the system settings if they want to give it to kids. Kids will be less likely to break a console that plays comfortably. Unless you're talking about kids who smash their consoles for the lulz, and don't deserve them, and are spoiled brats.

Yeah, the design is bad in my opinion but the concept is okay.

As all of you said, the concept is good, but the design is really bad

I feel the hate is stemming off from the frustration people are having with Nintendo and their ability to not properly handle their systems and market advertising.

The design is awful in my opinion, but we'll let the sales prove whether it is worthy of being sold.
