This is for new player to the fun and addicting series who want to get better. I'll be putting tricks that i have learned while playing the series. By the way my first Mario Kart was MK:Ds.

1. Drift: I see so many people who don't use this mechanic. About 60% of the people I play with don't do this. This helps in SO MANY ways. It helps get sharp and dull turns preventing bumping into walls or falling of the stage *Ahem Rainbow Road Ahem*. Is also gives you a speed boost if done correctly and a big speed boost if done perfectly. Trust me on this, it may be hard but it'll help. While I'm on the subject, ever time you catch air, jump. Sometimes you get speed boost when you land. This always works on ramps and dash pads.

2. Item smarts: Some items you can through or use right away and some you want to hold on to. I'll put a list down below. (Please note I may of mist new Mario Kart 8 items because I don't have a wii u :( sorry for the inconvenience. If I missed any please comment your trick with that item.

-Bananas: Save in case of tail riders (People riding your back) or red/green shells behind you.

-Triple Bananas: Use but don't throw or use, same rules as banana's

-Red Shell: Save for the perfect moment, and beware of throwing one at banana's

-Triple Red Shell- Use but don't throw, smae rules as red shell. DON'T THROW ALL AT ONCE, but don't
save them

-Green shell- Save these for when your right behind someone and you have a clear shot, also use to destroy road interference's (Banana's, Goomba's, Enemy's, etc.)

-Triple Green shell- Use but don't use. Same rule as green shell. DON'T THROW ALL AT ONCE

-Mushroom- Save for perfect moment. Don't use these while turning unless your completely safe. You might also want to save for when you bump into a wall.

Triple Mushroom- Same rule as Mushroom

Crown Mushroom (The orange mushroom)- Spam it on a straight lane :D

Blooper- Use instantly

Blue shell-Use instantly

Bullet bill- Use instantly

Tanooky suit (Forgive my spelling)- Use when your next to racers or you need to clear a road block

Star Power- Use instantly (BEWARE SPEED BOOST)

Fire flower- Save for when your behind a player, or spam behind multiple players.

Bomb-om: Use when theres a herd of players

3. Dodging: Item can be annoying when your trying to keep 1st 2nd or 3rd place. There are some ways to dodge but sometimes these tricks fail. There are no get out of jail free cards with this.

Dodge obsticals with Green shell, Tanooky suit, fire flower, star power, bullet bill, or just move away

Dodge shells with banana's and tanooky suit or other shells

Dodge star power/ Bullet bill by dodging or use star power/bullet bill
(You get the point)

4. Blue Shells: I hate these things, and i really hate them when i'm in second and still get hit with it. I heard that there is now an item to dodge it, but only in Mario Kart 8. Blue shells used to act like regular shells in older games but now they explode whoever is in 1st. There isn't anyway to dodge, but there are some things you can do. If your right by 2nd place player, get close to him and knock him out as well. Use all your items before you blow up. Most importantly, don't slow down.

If you have any tricks of your own, feel free to comment them. I know i'm missing some, but these are some that will diffidently help. Enjoy;)

Nice tips , I knew most of these when I first started playing Mario Kart for the DS but this should be quite helpful for those who in case didn't know it . Another tip I know would be :

In playing multiplayer , when a bunch of people about 3 or 4 are all around you , wait until you reach close to the mystery box then before you touch it , slow down until everybody past you and then get the box . This will make you get an item of better value without really being too far behind . Works very well at the beginning of the race

Sometimes when a blue shell is chasing you and there is someone quite close to you , reverse so that the blue shell will hit that person too . It is better than nothing ;)

Nice tip. I see how it's use full. Thanks;)

BTW the other tips I missed were:

Pick up coins as often as possible, they give speed boost, and are better than nothing.

Catch other players back to get a large speed boost (Ride behind them)

Use shortcuts ALL THE TIME

Nice. :)

Also, some smaller tips:

  • press R for a tiny hop right at the lip of a ramp/jump, it'll give you a small speed boost when you land
  • the sharper the turn you take while drifting, the quicker you the speed boost and perfect speed boost
  • try to drive behind opponents and then overtake them as you'll get a tiny speed boost from messing with their slipstream. Small lines will appear on the edges of the screen if you're doing it right
  • try to gets jumps anywhere and everywhere when you're in a place with raised surfaces, with the hop trick in the first point for the speed boosts

the most classic defense for a blue shell is to slow down enough to wher the person in 2nd place overtakes you so it just targets them instead. and making sharp turns really close to the wall is a good way to dodge red shells. for lighter characters, always go with something with high accelleration. even if you're hit by a blue shell, you can always catch up speed again really fast to the point where it doesn't matter. and the rainbow parts on the F-Zero track in mk8 boost your coins when you drive on it so its a great way to max out your speed starting out. and for the master sword in the Hyrule stage, all 3 bumpers in front of it need to be hit (not necessarily by you) and keep in mind that while gliders don't really do much for stats, they do have different qualities such as better height or further distance. also, i usually spam golden shrooms whenever. i can still hand the course pretty well most of the time lol. it's mostly only yoshi's back that gives me trouble on the egg cup.

Some tips about drifting: If you can sustain a drift for a certain amount of time, you'll trigger a speed-boost effect which is applied as soon as you take your finger off the drift button. There are two different types of boost available. When you've drifted far enough that you see little blue sparks fly out from underneath your vehicle, that means you can initiate the first stage boost. If you can hold onto that drift long enough to ignite orange flames beneath your kart, you'll instead benefit from a bigger speed boost when you finally let go.
