Super smash brothers is a very complex game that takes a lot of concentration and strategy to beat your opponent. Here are some helpful tips to help you be a better smasher defensively

Defending yourself is one of the hardest parts in the game. There are several things you can do and avoid to stop your opponent from landing some nasty attacks:

  • - Ground defense
  • Many people overuse their shield so that they can't until it recharges. You are forced to attack or resort to the air. This gives your opponent an opportunity to strike. Make sure to mix up your defense strategies on the ground so your opponent has a difficult time landing a hit.

  • Dodging by rolling a certain way can not only escape from danger, but leave your opponent vulnerable as well.
  • Using your shield may leave you vulnerable to a grab attack. But there are several upsides to the shield as well. Using your shield can get you out of danger from any dangerous dash attack or a low air attack, as well as a deadly smash attack. By fending yourself off with your shield, your opponent may become vulnerable to a dash attack, and if used wisely enough, you may even be able to land a smash attack.
  • Another helpful tip would be to dodge down. Dodging down can help you escape danger in a sticky situation. Suppose you are about to be hit with a low air attack or dash attack and need to get back on the offensive quickly. Dodging an opponents attack by dodging down can allow you to do such a thing. Dodging down requires strict timing, however. Misread your opponent and you will fall victim to your opponents attack.
  • Don't overuse your shield. This is very important not to do. Doing this may also leave you to the air or frequently dodging to escape enemy attacks, which enemy's may read your moves and strike when you are vulnerable.

Air defense
  • Defending yourself in the air is a lot easier than on the ground. The most basic way is to attack. Fend off your enemy until you can reach the ground for safety. Some down air moves take you straight down to the ground quickly. This can be used in desperate times of enemy air onslaught. Beware, however, a straight down attack can leave you vulnerable as well.
  • Another way of course is by simply dodging in the air. But you have to read the enemy perfectly if you want to do this, otherwise you still may be vulnerable to an air attack.
  • If you are you are being slaughtered in the air, and there is a very small margin of hope, the best thing to do is find an edge and roll back on to the arena.
Well, that's all I have to give you. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, don't hesitate to ask me in the messages down below. Hope this helps!!!!! :)

Very useful! I struggle with defending and usually just attack haha! Im vulnerable almost always and do too much jumping and things like that. I didn't realize there were so many methods for defending oneself in Smash. I will have to put these to the test next time I smash. Its nice to learn something new, it makes me feel better about what I'm doing. Anyways, thanks once again for these amazing and very useful tips!

No problem. Glad I could help!

Pro players use jumps to Dodge attacks as many players can read air dodges and punish them accordingly.

I forgot to add that!!! Remember tho jumping isn't the only way. That's when your mostly on the offensive, I believe. Thank you for the addition! :)

Good tips :p
Sometimes different moves or counters can be useful too depending on the situation

Here's a tip for you to add: Don't overuse your airdodge. Competitive players can read those and get the kill.

Yep! That's a great thing not to do! Always be aware of your enemy! And counters can be very useful too! But you have to be careful with using them because a misinterpretation could leave you vulnerable for a couple of seconds. Great additions guys! :)
