I was thinking of getting a 16gb sd card so that I could store more because my current one is only 2gb. I looked up how to do it and stuff but is there any risk of the save data being corrupted when I do this? I don't want to accidently lose all my save data while I'm transferring the data to the new sd card

There isn't, unless you remove the SD card while it's still copying or something like that. Simply copy everything from the old SD card into a hard drive on your PC, then cut and paste it into the new SD card. I was pretty scared too about moving the data, especially since the 3DS manual was so unhelpful about it, but it's quite straightforward. Here's a simple tutorial for transferring data that should clear any confusion, and there's even a video guide at the end: http://3dspedia.com/how-to-transfer-nintendo-3ds-sd-card-data/
