Up Smash

I seem to be having a little difficulty using up smashes. I've turned off tap jumping because I can't stand it but instead of doing the charging up smash, I keep doing the regular up attack. Also it appears that up smashes become easier when using it directly after moving in another direction. Maybe I'm just not fully used to the controls but is anyone else getting this sort of problem?

Well, it happens to me, but with dash attacks. The 3DS confuses the dash attacks and the side smashs.
However, I never got any trouble with Up smashs.

Hmm. I never have a problem between smashes and dash attacks/jumping. Guess you need to quickly go up and A at the same time (and make sure your Circle Pad starts in the middle before you do it and not just a tilt or a shorthop). Dash then Up Smashes do have some horizontal distance so that could be useful with some characters.

For me, it does the Up-smash whenever I want to use the regular up attack /:|
