A bit of context: Shouzou Kaga is the dad of Fire Emblem. Kaga is to Fire Emblem what Miyamoto is to Mario, with the difference that Kaga left Nintendo for creative differences.

Some time later, he would work on the Tear Ring Saga, a two games series that was a "spiritual succesor" of the Fire Emblem franchise, released for the PS1 and PS2. This led to a copyright case filed by Nintendo, in which the Tear Ring saga won and set a precedent for japanese creators to make spiritual succesors of existing franchises.

After after Tear Ring Saga: Bedrick Saga for the PS2, Kaga apparently left game development until 2016, when he announce an indie game project

Vestaria Saga is a game that Kaga and some of his friends from Intelligent Systems worked on in their free time for fun and released for free to the japanese public. Visually the game is nothing special, after all the game was made with pre-made assets, however the game has been critically aclaimed by those who have played it.

The game was only avaliable on japanese, and some fans had been working on a translation, but now Kaga has announced that the game will be avaliable in english on steam, which is great news, and there is even a demo avaliable now.

The game is to be released in 2019, and is yet to know if the translated game will be free, since the translation cost might be a little expensive, however I doubt the game will be very expensive if it even costs money.

I’m excited for this. Always wanted to play more of his games, and although I’d rather it be a physical copy on a nintendo platform I’m ok with this too.

I mean, if you have a japanese Wii U/3DS, you can get most of his games on VC

And if not, you can buy Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon in the Wii U VC (which is a remake of the first FE game), which you can get a discount for in MyNintendo right now

There is also Echoes which is a remake of the second game

I’ve played echoes and Shadow Dragon (I have both as physical copies) but I have never played any of his games after his work on Fire Emblem I mean. It’d be interesting to me to see how they are as Fire Emblem actually didn’t change much without him until Awakening (for better or for worse).

If you ever played Thracia, then you might know that the man loves to make his games mechanics convoluted. The "Kaga did it first" is not just a meme

Also, I have a theory as to why the games never changed all that much until Awakening. Is known that before Kaga left Nintendo, he left several notes and ideas to the group he was working on, both about gameplay and story elements.

Is not known how many notes he left or what did the notes say, but we can draw comparisons with his work in the Tear Ring Saga, where we can see several similarities between the Tellius games and the Berwick Saga, and FE7 being fairly similar to Utna Heroes Saga. Considering that the last game before Awakening (without taking remakes into account) was FE10, my theory is that IS ran out of Kaga notes, and had to bring up a story concept on their own, which resulted in Awakening and Fates

i want to play it
also those who havent played his other two games, tear ring saga is very good and berwick saga have a fan-translation in progress, you should check them, both have insteresting things, especially berwick saga with things like for example, horses have their own stats and you can attack them, or a "loyalty sistem" in wich a lot of characters are mercenaries and you have to be their friend to recruit them permanently

I would have played Tear ring saga but emulators of the console are problematic, so I'm in the process of getting a PS2 to play both, plus a bunch of other games I want to try (SotC, Ico, P4, FF7, GoW, etc)
