My mind is like an enigma
Towns Folk
I recently picked up villager because I love using him with customs and want to try the man himself. After a few days, I really warmed up to him and practice with my brother and friends at school. I know some tech, like pocket tricks, but is there some play tips and other tech that I can incorporate? Any tips beside pocket stuff would be nice, thanks.

Asides , you can use pocket effectively on many things such as items and moves , always try to pocket your opponents moves , but don't use them immediately , which is predictable , try to use it to enhance combos and pokes .

Lloid rockets make good projectiles to use as well as nice recovery , but don't underestimate it too much .

Try to use the Down B move Timber and have it up often . Cutting the tree down can be very strong to deal damage to opponents and can also be used for a defensive wall as well .

Hope that helps :D

I've had bad experiences with Lloid rocket recoveries. I cringe when thinking of Falcon's U-tilt...
Joking aside, I think these tips can help. I have not played 1v1s against my friends besides my bro, but I think these will be helpful. Especially the pocket tip. Inever thought to use pocketed items in pokes or strings. I also do not use timber often, mostly because I spoil myself with timber counter and its sheer annoyance and awesomeness. Thank you Eridan!

Usually, the Up Special is a better recovery option than the Lloid Rocket. Use the Tree to defend yourself from projectiles. Afterwards you can use the ax as an offensive tool. Dont rely on it too much, since the tree disappears rather quickly, and theres a lot of end lag in it. Because with most of Villagers attacks, since they can be reflected (Ex. Bowling Ball, Lloid Rocket, Tree, Plant Pot) The best projectile imo is the slingshot (Forward and Back Airs). It does nice damage, has some good range, and can kill in the low 100%s.

beside that you can pocket almost everything the pocket has invinsibility frames

Thank you guys for the tips! I played some more smash against my friends at school in 1v1 and 4 player games, and I can rack up damage pretty well, but in multi person matches, I have a hard time getting kills against the big body characters and they get me a lot with some bug hits. Should I play Villager as a zoner, or try and pressure them off stage and edgeguard?

Neutral B also gives Village some invincibility, it could help you avoid attacks in the air like when your opponent but only a short amount of time will not help you avoid jabs.

I think Villager has good zoning capabilities due to his immense amount of projectiles so incorporate that as much as possible. Also try to edgeguard often because Villager has plenty edgeguardoptions. (Bowling ball, Timber tree, down air, Forward air, Back air)

Villager can play as he wants and he can zone very well. You want to play keep away with your opponents both in the air and on the ground. You have planking (side special, fair/bair, then uair/dair or just up special to ledge and/or get to the other ledge on the opposite side of the stage.). You can space on the ground with Lloyd Rocket followed by dash attack or grab. You can plant a tree to keep space and you can use bowling ball on ledge to apply pressure. ftilt and dtilt are good get off options as well as his aerials. His up and down smash are great to kill or set up to kill, and he has an insane amount of control and is only afraid of pressure or someone outcamping/reflecting him.

Wow villager. Lets see. Oh yea just do lots of aerial attacks like his slingshot and his hydrant special with his sling shot combo and if they dodge the hydrant you can just grab your opponent. And there is the Bowling ball off the ledge. It is very useful and kills very fast with lots of characters. And use your pocket for projectiles and your tree off the ledge too! And get some off stage combat with villager to your opponent
