So yeah, I'm new to Smash Bros. but I'm definitely getting one of the upcoming games. Before I get the game, I want to know what is what so I'll be able to learn the ropes quicker than usual.

So a couple of questions..
  1. What are these Assist Trophies and how do they work? Are they helpful?
  2. How do items work? (not sure if there are items, but I heard about it somewhere, so yeah)
  3. How does the pokeball thingy work? (I heard the game has a pokeball or something)
  4. Final Smash - is that like the Fatality thing like how they do things in Mortal Kombat? lol
Also, is there anything else that I should know about?

1. Assist Trophies are immediately activated when you pick them up. Generally, they're good for you, because a lot of them deals damage to your enemies.
2. Depends on the item. Some are equipment, some can be thrown, and some can make a new character appear on the screen (Assist Trophies, Poké Balls).
3. Pokémon are like Assist Trophies. Just throw them, and a Pokémon will come and help you. Also, for legendaries, there are Master Balls, so be sure to take it if you see one !
4. No. It's a devastating move that you can activate only if you break a Smash Ball. Generally, they deal a considerable amount of damage, and they're really hard to avoid. Some of the Final Smash also modify the appearance and the power of a character (like Lucario, Charizard, or Bowser).

--> Be sure to use the training mode first, so, you'll be able to experience all the stages, as well as the items. Because some stages might have some hazards, and if you know them, they can be useful.

1. Assist Trophies are items that spawn on the field. Whenever they're picked up a character comes out and starts dealing damage, (or, in the case of the Isabelle assist trophy, throws you fruit to replinish health).

2. Most competitive players don't use items (For Glory won't hve them), but they're still a big part. Like @D4rkDragon said, you can throw them at the enemy depending on the item. There are so many items it's hard to keep track of them all, but I think everyone knows Mr. Saturn is so OP it breaks the game. /sarcasm

3. Pokéballs are Assist Trophies, but Pokémon. In In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS, there will also be Master Balls that only summon legendary Pokémon.

4. Final Smashes are generally a signature move, for example Pits Final Smash is The Three Sacred Treasures from Uprising. They will usually KO if they hit.
