Ever played an action RPG like Hero Siege? It's quite a bloody good game. (A Diablo-ish game that plays sorta like Geometry wars.)

I personally prefer JRPG's like the Tales of the Abyss or turn based RPG's like Pokemon where I can take some time to think out my next move. Strategy RPG's are okay they aren't my forte, however like Fire Emblem if the the story is good to great I'll play the game for the story.

Both, as long as action RPGs don't involve turn-based combat ones
Action RPGs are probably my favorite game genre ever, along with strategy and detective *cough*Phoenix Wright *cough*ones :p

Ugh... Why must I choose? Why must you curse me with this, the hardest of life choices?

On one hand, both the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series are great.
On the other, I've dropped hundreds of hours into games like Fire Emblem and the lesser known (but still amazing) Super Robot Wars series.
On the third, how-do-I-even-have-this hand, JRPG's like Persona are also amazing...

Okay, I'll choose SRPG's, but I won't enjoy choosing, sir. :p

Warning, if you don't like text, skip that post because I'm going on a writing spree :p

First of all, generally speaking (not only in video games but in software in general), I like when the interface is... well, an interface you know, just something that translates an action I do into an action in the software. For example, that's why I liked how older Windows versions allowed me to open Firefox once by clicking the Firefox icon once in the bottom bar, and open it twice by clicking twice (so "opening it twice" is just "opening it once" twice, sounds logical). That's not the case anymore in recent Windows versions, clicking twice opens it once then forces focus on it. Same "problem" with OS X and some Linux environment such as Unity, and same problem with GNOME by default but that one is smart enough to come with an extension to change its behaviour.

Now that's a cool story, but what does it have to do with the subject ? Well in a video game, I don't really like for example to move a mouse around and ask for a set of actions that I'll watch later. Obviously not all strategy RPGs are that slow, but you see what I mean. I like clicking buttons and see the result directly, as if I really did that myself.

On another note, I like when video games are basically an alternate life. You know, I turn my 3DS on and launch a game and now I can pretend I'm that character, going monster hunting for example... But I can't easily pretend I'm a character I can't customize, and I can even less pretend I'm several characters, even if I can customize them. And a lot of RPGs do that, you control several characters and play them all at once as a party because having them all allows for better strategies and such... but I don't care, I can't be them all so I don't like that. Pokemon is an exception since you have a team but you're the trainer, so that works. But what I'm mentionning here is one of the main reasons why I didn't even play GTA V yet even though I usually liked GTA games, that's because it doesn't have one main character in the solo mode (but three), from what I heard and read about it.

So that's why my vote goes to action, but if someone ever makes a "strategy RPG" that fits what I said (for example, MH could maybe fit, since we can play with friends as a party like in Strategy RPGs, and use each other's assets to win efficiently so that can be seen as strategy), I'm not against it, it's just that it would probably also fit the "action" category so my vote still goes there :p

hmmm, sounds like something i would love. simply because of the way you described it being bloody and diablo-ish. thats the sort of thing that holds my attention the longest, simply because of the gore and sorts. i dont know why, but ever since i was 16, ive gotten a big thrill out of seeing stuff like that in movies and games, thus it held my attention the most. still does even now, my taste for this sort of thing hasnt changed one bit.

i may sound like a sadistic and bloodthirsty woman here, but of course i do not in any way encourage these things to occur in real life. games and movies are an entirely different thing here. i imagine i dont need to clarify that, but i am just as a reminder.

as for my favorite between strategy and action RPG, im not very choosy otherwise. im very easy to please when it comes to video games, there are games i like but many others do not. the same is with more popular games on my end. i dont look at a game simply because everybody else out there likes it; i know my own tastes in games well enough that i know if i will like a game simply by watching a video of some gameplay or a game trailer. this sort of thing comes in time, and maybe with age also. it did for me.

I prefer Strategy RPG, personally, an example would be Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Every move or attack counts, and a wrong one could cost you the match. I also played the Fire Emblem Awakenining demo, and I really enjoyed it. Playing these sorts of games is good for burning time when you're bored, I could spend hours on them. xD

yes, that is very true. i too enjoy playing RPGs of many sorts just to use as a time killer, most notably pokemon games, though im quite certain they dont fall under the question here. but that is very well said on your end, i remember playing similar games with the same situation, where even one mistake can cost you the battle. it just gives you so much to think about and consider before making your next move, making the game very interesting as a result. i think that sort of thing adds to the fun, but everyone is different. what one person may like, another may not. just a simple fact of life.

I like action strategy RPGs I sadly can't think of the game right now but you ran around and fought like in KH but all the weapons had a different effect twords different monsters and each weapon only had so many uses before breaking. You also needed to plan where you ran to when you fought because one wrong move and you would be surrounded. It was like playing a full action kind of FE game it was extremely hard even though you only had on cheracter.

ARPG all the way, it's probably my favourite genre of game, tbh. I'm just terrible with strategy in general =/

I prefer strategy RPGs like for instance the original Fallout games (Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics) or Devil Survivor, the main reason I say this is because I just don't consider it an RPG if it doesn't have turn based combat (even though I know that pretty much everything with a leveling up system is an RPG).
