What really happens on villager birthdays in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

I know you have to get a present for the villager and you might get a gift in return, but is there anything else that goes on behind the scenes like a huge increase in friendship or something? What would happen if you miss a birthday?

Thanks!

You get a decent increase in friend points (more than you usually would for giving a gift on a normal day). As long as it’s nothing too cheap. I believe the requirement to get the most friendship points is a sell price over 500.
There is no penalty for missing a birthday other than guilt.

And you get the villager's poster if you get enough friendship points?

If you get enough friendship points, you have a chance to get their photo, which is a small framed picture of them. You get posters from inviting them to Harv’s island, which can then be bought from the Nook Stop kiosk. Both feature the same art, and the poster is larger, so it doesn’t really make sense why the photo is harder to get other than tradition.

you also get more points if the gift is wrapped with wrapping paper.
