Which one?

So, I just recently bought new 3ds and I'm planning to buy Pokemon Y for myself and a Super Mario game for my boyfriend.
Question is: Which Super Mario game should I buy?
My boyfriend wants a game that feels kinda like the old NES Super Mario game we used to play when we were little kids.
I'm not really into playing Super Mario games so I don't know which one to buy. He doesn't want SM 3d Land so I'm guessing the only option is Super Mario Bros. 2, but is there any other option?

I know the Eshop has some classics that he might like, I think Super Mario Bros 2 he'd like but here are the ones available on the eshop that are the classical ones.

I think getting him a eShop card would be fine too so he could get them from the shop

Yup :3 The Super Mario Bros from the Virtual Console might be the best choice Still though, wouldn't your boyfriend want to try some of the newer games like New Super Mario Bros 2 for the 3ds? (Though it's 29.99 >.<) I think you'll be able to choose correctly based on preference

I told him to try it and maybe he'll like it but he likes most stuff that are old, not only games, but music, movies, everything that's old, made even before both of us were born But since I want to play New Super Mario Bros. 2 too, I'll try to convice him to try playing it and if it doesn't work, I guess I'll have to buy him one of the classical Super Mario games
