Ever since Smash came out, there have been an awful lot of "leaks", and I just wanted to ask why, what do people get out of making them? A couple of cheap laughs followed by hellfire and disappointment. Like a little while back, there was a leak of Shovel Knight and a Runbow stage, we all hoped it was real, but it wasn't. But anyway, back to the older leaks. Who remembers the colossal leak that happened two summers ago? Pepperidge Farm remembers, that was pretty much the only leak that was proven real. Everything else was nonsense. Now I don't mind a good leak every now and then, but still, sometimes it gets pretty damn annoying.

If we're talking about purposely making fake leaks without any sort of evidence, claims, proof, etc, then it's probably just for attention. Or maybe people just following rumors without checking into it because of sheer excitement of said rumors. But yeah, I'm going with the former reason because it's more likely.

Yeah, they completely want to be famous. They are "sure" that their favorite character will be in Smash so they make a topic about it. Then people talk about that topic, and if in the end it reveals to be true, good for the original poster, they guessed right. Otherwise that topic will just be forgotten. So you can earn some temporary fame without losing anything.

And then as @Elchronic Maelstrom said, there are people who believe what the people I mentionned in my first paragraph wrote and who feed the rumor.

From what I've seen, many fake leaks are also people who misunderstood something. Like... some make a fake picture just for fun to show off their editing skills, someone doesn't read, take the picture out of context, shares it, snowball effect.

LOL. Goomba Confirmed.

In addition to what's been said I think it can be for the challenge. Can I make somenthing so convincing it will fill even the big media outlets? How long will it take to start finding mistakes?

There is also may be the desire to test just how gullible can people be. Leaving on purpose clear n00bish mistakes for others to find.

Some other can also do it in order to raise awareness to the gaming company on how much is that character, object, location desired. If it passes as real and many gamers clearly want it. It builds a lot of pressure on the company.

Stuff like that is really complicating for me. I don't trust leaks anyway unless it's from Nintendo, or any gaming company themselves because people like this guy can make up fake leaks. And like my first comment, people can make fake leaks, get lots of attention, and then these fake leaks spread like wildfire.

It's just dumb people who either wanna
A: Get more publicity for the character they want to get in
or
B: They just don't have a life and thinks it's funny because as soon as people see ANYTHING about a possible "leak" they freak out.
I'm with Elchronic Maelstrom on this one, I don't trust anything unless it's straight from Nintendo. I don't trust screencaps from tweets from so-called people at Nintendo, and I certainly don't believe anything on Reddit.
Honestly, i don't even go around looking for stuff about it. If Nintendo sends me an email about it, then I'll know. I don't even care if I find out about it later than anyone else. I wanna know about it from the source.

It's literally just like any other troll. They did it just because they can. That's it. They don't need a reason :p

Some people just want to watch the forums burn.
