Why do you think most 2D sprites pop out more when using 3D?

I've always thought about this. However, I have not a clue. I'm assuming it's because they only have two dimensions, so it is easier for Nintendo to manipulate the sprites; making them appear to pop out of the screen.

Probably to give it more depth, and to do SOMETHING with the 3D, since it isn't 3D itself. Textboxes do that too.
