This is something I've been wondering since the very first Pokemon game I played (Red). Why is there only one save slot? Is it becuase of hardware limitations, because while I could believe that with the GameBoy that seems unlikely with the 3DS. Or is it just the Nintendo stubbornness we know and love?

Probably because of the fact that if there are 2 or more save files, they would have to put legendaries in the story. I mean, they could make it an option to make a second save file without legendaries, but that would kinda mess up the game imo, because some scenes in Pokémon have legendries in them. Probably to preserve the rarity of the legendaries and some online stuff. c:

I think it may have something to do with trading/battling other trainers. Also I don't think its possible for someone to trade or battle on the same system without any conflict. Also it would be a hassle for mystery gifts to be received on the wrong save file.

I think you're right, plus having a second file also encourages soft resetting.

What the others said about trading and rarity and also because it would hold a bit more data which would make it harder to get all the storage. Also many people could expose weaknesses and hack until they could duplicate items or something :p

I believe that there is only one save file because of the fact that although it doesn't seem much , I believe that one Pokemon game is probably large in size of it's game because it has to contain all of the different information of Trading/Battling and online features so it could only manage as one file

I think that it is to make the adventure more worth it in a way than to have 2 save files :/

Honestly, I don't see it happening on the 3Ds...It could make the game slow and like the others have said it's the rarity of the legends and then it's battling/trading too. It sounds complicated to me iunno..plus if you own Pokemon Bank, it would mean you have two files to get Pokemon from, it could possibly start glitching...it just doesn't sound quite good to me.

Although most of us would probably love to have an extra save file (including me) I highly doubt it happening, especially with the wealth of new online features and trading, as well as Mystery Gifts. With two save files, it can quickly get complicated when it comes to trading and online battling, especially with the Friend Code, plus if you wanted to transfer over from one save file to other it would be confusing and may be a complicated procedure.

I did in a way manage to restart my game without losing any Pokemon on my initial save file by using the Pokemon Bank: I transferred everything from my first save file over to the Bank, then restarted the game, chose a different starter, and brought everything back from the Bank into my new game. It worked, but I lost all my items (including the Mystery Gift Blazekinite, a rarity at the time...)

I haven't though about the Mystery Gifts actually! You're right. I doubt they would want complications and making the rarity of Mystery Gifts...not so rare.

One of the main reasons I always wanted two save files was because I was forced to play with my brother, meaning we would both basically play different parts and neither would play the entire game. This system basically makes it impossible to share a Pokemon game.

And while I might be totally wrong on this I was under the impression that the 3DS was technologically advanced enough to handle two save files, especially since it directly uses an SD card now. Mystery gifts I admit I didn't think of.

From what I've heard, the original games had 1 save files because of the hardware limitations. However, after the new games were coming out, Nintendo decided to keep one save files because it was "tradition." At least, that's what I've heard from people.
