There have been many rumors that the NX may either be a handheld or a home console. The truth is is that it is going to be a new handheld. There are many reasons that can back up this idea:
"New 3DS is a test"
The first reason is that the New 3DS is, in fact, a test that Nintendo is trying out in terms of new software and hardware. Examples are the C-stick, Processing speeds and the NFC reader/writer. These may be add-ons we'll expect to see in the console.

"The Zigzag Theory"
One of the theories, and it can be disproven, is that it will be a handheld because if we look back, the Game&Watch came first, then the NES, then GameBoy, then the Super NES, then the GameBoy Color, then the Nintendo 64, then the GameBoy Advance, then GameCube, then the DS, after came the Wii, then 3DS, then Wii U, and next is NX. The Virtual Boy is left out because it didn't do too well and it had, like, 6 or 8 games.

If I'm wrong, then prove me, if not, then feel free to discuss about it.

The New 3ds was not a test in my opinion. If it was a test, they would not release it publically cuz it might ruin the sales of the NX. The new 3ds was a hit and they would not want to just test it for the NX. They hadn't even THOUGHT that there will be something called an NX in the future when they announed the New 3ds for Japan.

The New 3DS is considered a test simply due to the fact that this happened before. The DSi is what I consider a test to see how the camera and an online store would work on their future generations of handheld hardware.

@Super Smash Jordan There is no way Nintendo Nx could be a handheld. They just released the New Nintendo 3ds and they wouldn't abandon the fans who bought it. The Wii U is already 5 years old and its not doing so well, Nintendo's only choice is to replace Wii U. And plus Nintendo already confirmed it wont be VR or a new portable console.

To be fair, N3DS is just an upgraded model of the 3DS but I agree, it's too soon for a new handheld (I'd give it until late 2017 anyways, same with Wii U) but I can see it being a normal console or hybrid. Oh, and Wii U is only almost 3 years old.

That would be very funny XD 'nx...The 3ds that was a 3ds but was never a 3ds...' But i don't see that happening sadly...Too many handheld's coming out from them it's most likely gonna be a console :p. Because the wii u was there last console and it's awesome too >,< Please give us info fast nintendo!

The most compelling argument is that Nintendo has a pattern of releasing handheld, then console, then handheld, etc. It's similar to the pattern that the strongest system has never won, with the exception of the PS4 (so far). The pattern to years to break.

But Wii U needs a replacement more than 3DS, so it's possible that it could be both (In a way).

I don't think the New 3DS would cut into sales. Like if the Dsi released in 2010, I doubt that it would ruin 3DS sales. But it would screw over Dsi owners, since if they waited and got a 3DS they ould play all the DS games, plus more features, plus 3DS exclusives.

Also, they probably knew about the NX when the N3DS released in Japan. I'm guessing it was in the planning stages.

Ok I'm just gonna updated my previous comment because I change my mind. I think Nintendo NX will be both Handheld and Home Consle. Think about it, Nintendo wants an OS system like Ios where IPad and IPhone are both connected. they want to do same with Portable and home. Nintendo also wanted to do that second screen thing, where we could take the gameplay somewhere else and play on the gamepad. If it was both Handheld and Home, dey could design it to make the Portable as a second screen.

Well, the new 3ds is something there to enhance the 3ds experience. Its not new. If it was, they would have stopped making 3ds games. I agree with you that it will be both a console and a handheld, and it will come in 2017 or 2018. That would make sense considering how old the 3ds would be. It has to be both

Considering how old the 3ds is, and the estimated release timing of late 2017/2018, the NX being either a handheld or a combination makes a lot of since. I want it to be a combination of both handheld and console, but I don't know if Nintendo would do that. But, considering the DSI, having the NX be a handheld is not out of the question, and actually seems quite likely to me.

You may never that it may be home console

Actually i really want this console to be new homeconsole due to some reason(actually i am still afraid that this thing is going to replace Nintendo 3ds . I KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, but i am still little afraid )

But i must some thing you wrote are actually pretty chance of begin handheld console

As it has been revealed by the developers, almost certainly, the NX will be a hybrid! That means it will be a home console, much like the Wii U (with a similar gamepad), but it will probably be possible to simply disconnect the controller and play on the go with it! Nintendo IS known to experiment with things like that a LOT, so it doesn't seem impossible, especially with the change of the hardware vendors that are included in the system's production! Also, if one considers the fact that this is going to be the biggest attempt at a gaming system the company has ever done, we can at least expect something this huge! If Nintendo pulls this off, then it will almost certainly become the go-to next generation console! I for one would love to see that happen! That way, there won't be system exclusives either! For example you could play Splatoon on the go!

I truly wouldn't mind if the NX was revealed to be one or the other, or both (or even neither). Seeing how the 3DS and Wii U function, I think Nintendo could find a way to combine the two differing type of platforms. However, until we get more information, I'm not going to pick a side, just so I won't be disappointed if I'm wrong, lol.

I'm not sure I'd agree too much with "The New 3DS is a test"
I think that the New 3DS was there so that perhaps the 3DS can live on a bit more and so that there will be more games that will be released for it, thus sorta expanding the lifespan. Plus, if it were a test, then wouldn't there be no reason to release the New 3ds?

I kinda have to agree with Beari. N3DS should have never been released if it were a test, let alone make a bunch of sales. Like the 2DS, N3DS and XL expand the consumer's options of handhelds to choose from, each one differing due to its uniqueness. Saying that it's a test only makes things convenient to the "Zig Zag Theory" you proposed. xD

There has been rumors that the NX will be a home and handheld console, and I hope that it is :D

N3DS seems more of a sales promotion than a test. I feel that the NX has nothing to do with the N3DS or previous consoles, and that most likely it'll be a console. There's no real evidence so we just have to wait until E3 to learn about this thing.

Maybe both. Who knows?
