I don't really know tbh. I know Club Nintendo used to give out theme codes but that's MyNintendo now.. or maybe some special offer.

I don't think you can give someone a theme from the theme shop. The only way to buy them is digitally, unlike digital games where you can go to a retailer and buy a download code. The only way for someone to give it to you is for them to give you a $5 eshop code which is and extra $2 I believe.
