Nintendo revealed their plan using NFC figurines for both consoles – 3DS and Wii U. The first game that will use this will be Super Smash Bros. 4, and it looks like Mario Kart 8 will have support too in a future.
For the moment, these figurines will allow you to train and personalize a CPU character, where you can use it for training yourself, as a emergency help when playing with friends or just let them battle while you watch.
