If you are familiar with Nintendo at all, then you know that they have always been strict when it comes to third parties. However, as demonstrated with Sony and Microsoft, third parties are where the majority of cash lies. So why has Nintendo never tried giving many indie devs a chance?
To be honest, I don’t know if there is a definitive answer. Nintendo has always been like this, and it’s for this reason (among a few others but mainly this one) why Nintendo has never actually been on top in the modern generation console races.
But now that’s all about to change. At the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC for short) in San Francisco a couple days ago, a few already existing indie titles along with some Wii U exclusives were announced. Existing titles such as Octodad and Don’t Starve were announced, along with Never Alone coming later this June. Wii U exclusives include Runbow and Affordable Space Adventures. Swords and Soldiers 2 was also announced, but I don’t believe it’s going to be a Wii U exclusive.
These games may not seem like much to you, but believe me: they’re a huge step for Nintendo. They actually made the first move in talking to the Runbow devs, so this means they are now actively seeking out indie devs. Maybe Nintendo is finally awake, and can use indie devs to take over the gaming industry!
