Well, I wouldn't describe Q as Star Trek's "Illuminati", but rather as a god of mischief. Secondly, in the large Star Trek fan base (that I am part of), many are inspired by the series and try to take in to consideration the moral of stories within. Sure, some people may forget them, but often people re-watch episodes due the unique stories.
