Chapter 20: Ending the Years-Old Struggle

I woke up, but this time I didn’t wake up on my own. Loz was shaking me when I woke up, and seemed to be in a panic. I asked “Loz, what’s wrong?” Loz answered “Big Brother is gone! Kadaj got up first, then woke me up, and we couldn’t find him anywhere!” I sighed but quickly slipped out of drowsiness and sat up “Great. Does Mother know about this?” Loz shook his head “No… she couldn’t reach him, either. I hope nobody killed him… ohh, man…” I disagreed “Kill Sephiroth? Not in a million years. You know he wouldn’t go down that easy. Wherever he is, I’m sure its just interference in his location. Let’s go to the Northern Cave. That’s where he was going to summon Meteor, so it seems likely he just moved out early. But even so, some kind of notice wouldve been nice…” Loz shook his head sadly “I hope youre right. He had the Black Materia, too… If the enemy got that, we’d be in big trouble.” I stood up and put a hand on his shoulder “Hey, calm down. Sephiroth is no weakling; even Shinra isnt strong enough on their own to stand against him for long. Im sure he’s ok.” Kadaj came in and signalled us to follow her, and we did. We ended up in the main hall of the lab we’d been staying in, and Mother was already there waiting for us. She had on tight black leather clothing with long sleeves, and pants that had a hole for her reddish tendril to poke through near her abdomen. She was also carrying a large metallic bar that had sharp edges and was hollow. It gave off a strange silver glow in her hands. Mother explained “It appears Sephiroth has gone ahead of us, and based on the current objectives of our mission, its safe to assume he made for the Northern Cave to summon Meteor. What he failed to realize upon doing so is the possibility that the roaming Zeta Weapon could grow more aggressive if Meteor is successfully summoned. If he makes contact with it on his own, we don’t know what might happen due to poor recon on the new beast. We’ll need to head there, and quickly.” I argued “But its not gonna hit in one day, right? So if Zeta does grow more aggressive, we’ll need to fend it off or avoid the monster for how long?” Mother replied “The time is exactly 20 days until Meteor makes impact with the Planet. So we either avoid it and let it be obliterated during Meteor, or make haste to defeat it before Meteor lands.” Kadaj worried “But, what about the mako vaccine Hojo had to finish? There’s not enough time for him to do it!” Mother said “The mako vaccine has been completed. The sample he used on Sephiroth was working fine. Its no longer the radiation we need fear about this beast; it’s the weapon’s power we must be cautious and wary of. Even Hojo hasn’t been able to fathom how strong it is. But—don’t forget the space warp he described that caused Sector 7 and the Shinra building to return overnight. He knows that Zeta did that.” Loz replied “Oh no… what if it rewinds us?! I don’t want it doing that!” I agreed “That’s exactly why we need to be careful and preferably avoid fighting Zeta. I doubt there’s any protection from something like that. If it does send us back in time, we’ll end up redoing everything over again.” Kadaj moaned “Unngh… no way… we cant beat that monster!” Mother added “That’s exactly why we must move quickly on our way to the far north. It’s a long drive, so prepare well, my children. The sooner we get there, the lower our odds of running into Zeta Weapon become. The same goes for Sephiroth being threatened by this formidable menace.” I nodded and understood “Got it. We’ll prepare, and act fast. Mother, are you going with us for this one?” Mother nodded “I must. Im the only one in this group strong enough to slow down Zeta, so I’ll be backup in case we hit a snag. In the event we do run into it, I’ll distract it and I want you three to escape while it’s focused on me.” Kadaj gasped “And leave you to die?! But Mother!” Mother replied “Don’t worry. I have a plan. The beast will not fell me.” Loz shrugged “Alright, well I guess we gotta bet on your plan, then. If we don’t, we’re all gonna get caught.” I nodded, then led the way outside to our motorbikes, and I led the drive there. Mother ended up sitting on Loz’s motorbike for the drive since she still hadnt grown new wings.

Later that day, at the North Cave…

After a long and boring drive, we finally made it to the north cave. We didn’t encounter Zeta or see any sign of it, but all of us knew to stay alert just to be sure. Mother ended up leading the rest of the way once we arrived, and the rest of us followed behind her. She seemed to know the area very well. We ended up at the central area of it, and there he was: Sephiroth was kneeling some ways ahead with his back to us, almost as if praying to something. I assumed he had the Black Materia in his hands. I said “He’s ok… thank goodness.” Loz glanced around “Hey, is it just me… or is it strangely quiet here except for the Planet’s cries?” Kadaj agreed “Yeah, I don’t know about this… are you sure that’s him and not a phony?” Mother nodded “No, that’s Sephiroth. Keep your voices down so he can focus… and keep your ears peeled for any unusual sounds. We cant let anyone disturb him.” We all nodded in agreement, and stood in a long silence. The ground began to shake before long, and I saw a dark mist appear in front of Sephiroth that appeared to envelope the Black Materia he was holding. I kept my eyes on him, and for some reason, I felt uneasy even though nothing abnormal seemed to be happening. I heard a loud screech that sounded like it came from high up and nervously said “Umm… what was that?!” Loz panicked “Maybe it’s Meteor making the noise..? I hope…” Mother hardened her expression and shook her head “No, that was not Meteor you children heard at all… There’s something right above us!” I quickly drew my revolver and Kadaj drew her souba. Loz also prepared to fight and armed his dual hound. We saw a familiar beast make a heavy landing in front of where we came in and it roared, making the same screechy noise we heard only seconds ago. I gasped “Impossible! That cant be the same one! It looks even stronger than before… I can tell.” Mother added “This is Zeta Weapon, but its exuding so much power… was it this strong when you ran into it before?” I replied “Not even close! This one’s way stronger than the one I remember!” Loz grew serious “Well we cant just sit here and look at it! Take em out!” Mother agreed “He’s right. We have no choice but to fight it; if we let it go, it will harm Sephiroth and Meteor wont be finished.” We engaged in combat with the beast right away after that, doing all we could to keep it from Sephiroth. The good thing was it didn’t seem to notice him, but the bad thing was we were barely doing any damage to it. It appeared to have strong metallic parts all over its body that wouldn’t even get scratched. Loz groaned “Ugh! Just die already!” Mother said “At this rate, we’ll run out of strength before we do any damage to it…” Kadaj asked “What do we do..? Its too strong…” Mother answered “There is one thing I can do, at least… stand back, my children.” We returned to the ground after that and got out of Mother’s way. Mother held her metal bar in both hands and it began to shine brightly. Mother cried “Armor Break!” Seconds later, the metal that coated the beast cracked, then immediately shattered. Loz happily cried “Yeah! That’s more like it!” Mother turned back to us and said “You can defeat it now! Hurry!” We continued fighting the monster after that, and were damaging it this time too. The beast’s red eyes changed to green, and it let out another screechy roar. But this time, it kept its mouth open and began charging a strong beam that looked like powerfully condensed mako. But the color didn’t look like just mako; it was mixed with golden streams of light in it as well. A white ring of light appeared around the beam it was charging in its mouth. Kadaj cried “Oh, shoot! We cant dodge! This room is sealed off!” I turned to Loz and said “Loz, use your strength to send that beam back to it!” Loz nodded and held his arm out that had his dual hound attached. Strangely, the same white ring that appeared around the beam engulfed the room, lining the floor around all of us. That made me nervous. Kadaj worried “Um… why is it still charging..? And what are these rings that we’re seeing…?” I kept silent, hoping that Loz’s counter would work. Kadaj panicked “Ive got a bad feeling about this! We need to run!” I said “We cant! What about Sephiroth and Meteor?!” Kadaj moaned nervously but didn’t argue. Mother also seemed concerned but kept calm “Kadaj is right… We don’t wanna wait around for this.” Loz seemed to hear us and came back “I’ll carry Sephiroth! You three, run for it!” We all nodded in agreement, and Loz grabbed Sephiroth and carried him on his way to us. Sephiroth noticed and said “What are you doing? Put me down, Loz.” Loz said “I cant! Something really bad’s about to happen, and we don’t got time to talk! Just bear it for now!” I kept behind Mother as we ran, and heard a loud crashing noise some ways behind us, getting down to take cover. Loz managed to avoid getting hit, and let Sephiroth go. None of us had gotten hurt. I asked “Is everyone alright?” Mother said “im fine. We managed to avoid that, at least.” Sephiroth got up and looked the other way, holding the Black Materia in one hand. He said “No, wait… something’s not right. There’s light running along the ground…” He pointed at what he saw with his free hand, and the rest of us stood up and saw what he was pointing at. Kadaj asked “Whats that? Lifestream?” Loz said “No…” Out of nowhere, the streams of white light running along the ground ahead had lit the entire ground in the area, and there was a heavy tremor that followed; all within a matter of seconds. Kadaj screamed, and I realized that she had disappeared, followed by Loz, then Mother, and then Sephiroth. My heart was pounding so hard it was all I could feel besides the worst fear I had experienced in my whole life “Mother!!” I panicked, glanced around “Whats happening?!! Where’s my family?!” Before I knew it, I felt a wracking pain all over my body and screamed. Seconds later, I had whited out before I could begin to grasp what was going on. I barely made out my words “No… this cant be real…”

Sometime later on…

I woke up, and found myself in a strange place. There were flowers all around, and a small pool of black water that I realized I was sitting in. I moaned “Ugh…. What happened? Where am i?” I shook my head and got up, and saw Loz resting on the other side of the black water. I shook him awake to see if he was ok, and he opened his eyes “Yazoo?” I helped him up, and he asked “What happened? Where’s Kadaj? And Mother?” I shook my head “I don’t know, but…” I didn’t finish. I realized that both of us were 10 years old again, and worried “Oh no… this cant be good. Loz, your reflection—the water.” He stepped in and cried out in shock when he realized what I saw “No way! But that’s impossible! And what the heck is this place?!” I shook my head “I don’t know, but… we gotta find Kadaj first! Then we’ll catch up to Mother and Sephiroth. Kadaj isnt as confident as Mother and Sephiroth are, so she needs us most right now.” Loz moaned “Did that big monster we saw… send us back in time..? is that what all that white brightness was?” I sighed, realizing he was right. There was no other logical explanation to work with here “Im afraid youre right… But since we’re both 10, that means they’re still gonna look for us. We were with Sephiroth and Mother since we were 8, and Kadaj was 6. So that means they’re still around.” He nodded, and I lead the way through the area that looked like some kind of abandoned church filled with flowers. I found a way back out, and realized we were in the slums again somewhere. Loz grumbled “Aww man… we’re in Midgar? Talk about a perfect place to send us…” I sighed “I know, but we know how to get back outside. But only after we find Sister.” I lead the way to Sector 6, and I heard a girl screaming as if she felt threatened. I followed where the sound came from, and drew my revolver, forcing my way past people who were blocking the way into the hotel the screams seemed to come from. Loz armed his dual hound as well, and we scared the people who were in our way. I saw a guy wrestling with Kadaj when we were inside, trying to force her into some room nearby. I pointed my gun at him and yelled “Stop! That’s my Sister!” The man cried “Gyaeeiigh!!” He immediately let go of her, and I realized who he was. I saw the shiny blue hair and pale skin, and said “Mister Damion…? No…” He appeared confused “Damion? How you know my name, little boy?!” I sighed sadly, seeing he didn’t remember us. I returned my focus to the situation and said “Just let her go. Make one more move, and im going to fire.” He cried out fearfully, hastily backing away and running off to the entrance to leave. I lowered my gun and shook my head in disbelief “Its Damion… he doesn’t remember us.” Loz asked “But how? After he was so nice and worried about us too… it doesn’t make sense!” Kadaj sighed in relief and walked toward us “That was close… thank you, Yazoo. And Loz, too.” I nodded “No problem. You went after Damion to get help, right?” She nodded but then grew sad “I did, but he didn’t seem to remember me, and then he started saying all of these weird and scary things… I tried to run when he brought me in here, but we ended up fighting because I knew he was up to something… probably something bad.” I couldn’t grab my souba either because he was pulling too hard for me to reach. Yazoo, whats going on? Something isnt right. We were all reversed back to our younger years, and Damion doesn’t remember us either… I cant find Mother and Sephiroth.” I shook my head “I wish I knew… but ive got a bad feeling about this.” Loz suggested “Its really like we got sent back in time… but we kept our memories. Mister Damion didn’t.” Kadaj agreed “I know… the people in sector 6 don’t seem as nice either. They’re all scary and mean now! I don’t know what happened after I got swallowed in that white light before…” I said “The same with us… we all just woke up in a different place. Have we really been sent back in time..?” Loz groaned sadly “And after all that work… what about Meteor? It worked, right? Its coming?” I replied “We’ll have to reach the surface and check, or we wont know.” Kadaj and Loz nodded in agreement, and we managed to make our way upstairs, on our way to a way out of Midgar. Before we went out, Kadaj looked up at the sky, but quickly looked back down and shook her head sadly “Its not there… Meteor wasn’t finished before we were sent back.” I suggested “or Sephiroth finished it, and it was reversed by all of us being sent back in time.” Loz grew happy and said “Oh, so if we go back to the future where we were with Mother and Sephiroth, Meteor will be up there, right? There’s our way back!” I sighed “Loz, how can we go back when we have no way to do it? Unless you’ve learned how.” Loz grumbled “Ugh… this stinks! No fair!” Kadaj moaned, feeling discouraged “This cant be… what in the world is happening..?” I sighed, and led us out of Midgar. I decided to lead us to the Forgotten City, since it was far away from Midgar and we would be less likely to get found out. I silently tuned into Mother and thought Mother, wherever you are, or wherever you went… please, hear me out. Help us find out where we are, and if Sephiroth is alive too, lead us to him once more…
