ESports as a Viewer

Before last month, I never considered watching e-sports. The idea of watching other people play games was weird to me, especially with fighting games. To me, games were meant to be played, not spectated. It didn't make sense to me to watch someone else play something when I could easily be playing it instead.

At E3 this year, I decided to give e-sports a try solely to watch Splatoon 2 and see what changes were made to the game. After about the first round robin, I realized I wasn't focusing as much to the technical improvements to the game, but instead I was getting invested in the players, rooting for people I had never heard of before this day.

This experience really opened me up to what e-sports could be about for me. It means getting invested in people through their strategies, seeing the types of play most similar to your own and rooting for them.

Beyond e-sports, I've also discovered fun in just watching people on twitch. While the excitement of a tournament may not be there, the fun aspect of learning and studying players still is there.

Since E3, I've joined the tournament scene in ARMS as a viewer. This game has been surprisingly fun to spectate, and next month when I join the ring, I hope the join I've felt from watching will carry over into playing as well.
