each of the 3 main towns in the game have their own sets of pets, with birds being exclusive to the DLC as well as dragons in the last area of the normal gameplay. (also dlc only) partners only gain experience after being dismissed from your party, and more if they don't die that often. any other questions, let me know. =)

And second off, to get different colors, you have to advance through the story and go to the different towns; each will have different colors of both cats and dogs.
