Guys, there's no denying it.Everyone has pointed it to be it,and I'll repeat this summary again. This is the biggest Nintendo product advertisement in history that's almost 90 minutes long.Considering that would pretty much result in a movie by its runtime, how would it end up as such?(And get ready, because I'll most likely be referring to the advertisement a lot during this review :oldman:)

The synopsis regards two young boys by the names of Jimmy and Cory.Jimmy is traumatized by the tragedy that strived his sister two years before "current modern times",and he can't speak any other word that isn't "California" afterwise.Their family is at a rather unstable state.Thing is,his brother Cory comes along for a journey with Jimmy to reach there because of that. They eventually meet up with a girl named Haley, and as probably suspected, the three are chased by the police to come back home. However, bigger business implies that Jimmy, with his super skills in Nintendo games, has to compete in a videogame tournament to compete amongst other Nintendo players for a lifetime chance with the reward of 50,000 dollars so he can prove that he doesn't have to live his life in an institution;and so the run begins.
I didn't fully understand the story the first time I saw the movie(the version I watched had mediocre quality, with the camera way too zoomed in to see a lot of what was happening, and it was the only one I could find :writing:),but after searching up a bit of what was really going on,I thought it was actually solid. The videogame astetic isn't necessarily tapped in to just promote the media,as the objective is reasonable enough. Some moments meant to slow down the pace and become a little serious aren't really passed on properly for the most part,as the movie is a constant trip from the starting point to the goal.Take that out,and the plot is somewhat decent.

No questions, this is more of a giant Nintendo 80s advertisement commercial extended to 84 minutes more than anything else.Almost every locale the trio go to there's at least two or three games that made their appearance in the NES before.I mean, how could we forget hearing "I love the Power Glove. It's so bad" after we've seen it for the first time? It's common knowledge. And in case you aren't aware, there's also a literal announcement of a videogame no person in the gaming community of 1989 knew until it was announced later in the movie.I won't say which is just in case, although let's say it's just plain smart and awesome when it comes up and showcased. It is entertaining to spot the variety of games these citizens are playing. The list includes Double Dragon,Super Mario Bros. 2/USA,Contra,Rad Racer,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and so forth.Old-school fans will have their enjoyment with the clever references. :)

With the cast, there are number of characters through the movie to be seen. They are mostly alright on their own.I could share some bits of sympathy for little Jimmy because of his state of mind after his sister's death by drowning admitedly.I can't really state the same for Cory,Lucas and Putnam.Cory is mostly the one to bring the cheesyness to the script, and sometimes it feels like he's just full of himself;Lucas is the big-shot Power Glove posterboy and that's all we know of him,and Putnam is more of a jerk to one of Jimmy's brothers and their father who just want to find their kids instead of actually acting as a legit officerman.I will say that the moments he and the two members "duke it out" against each other are a bit funny, but it's as if they were competing to see who can find the kids first, which in a situation like this, doesn't have much of a point honestly because you are going after kids who cross through 2 entire states in the movie. You don't need the competition to see who has the better instincts. :panda:

Ok,so 'The Wizard' is pretty much a Nintendo commercial that's long as a movie, and it mostly stays as that. Its own structure is decent, but nothing too outstanding per say.Look at this as one of the industry's finest examples of commercial advertisement, because the movie without that aspect woudn't be as popularly known by the people as it is now,and most likely worse if kept the same routine. Its own content are at best passable, but considering this is where one of the best NES games was announced amongst other similar things,it deserves some extra credit. :p

And the final verdict is:
It's OK!
