Do you really choose your main?

Do you choose your main, or does your main choose you? I naturally chose Marth back in Melee because he plays a hot-cold strategy, or many players switch from offense to defense. In SSBU I'm considering dropping him because they really took away everything good that he had

Haha ! At least, you weren't playing Falco in Melee, as I was. Not only he changed a lot in Brawl, but they decided to change him again in Smash 4, making his signature attack useless: his down air now has latency before spiking and has a huge landing lag.

And they didn't take away everything good Marth had. At least he still has tippers.

And yeah, I agree that sometimes, your main chooses you. I tried to choose Lucina at first but one of my friends was always winning against me with his Mii Gunner, or when I was winning, it was a close win. Then I tried Captain Falcon against him after not even a week of training. I won. Twice. Three times. I kept winning against him. And now it's the opposite of what it was with Lucina, I always win or when he does, it's a close win.

Since this is my first SSB game, I just tried (almost) every character and I noticed that I'm bad at handling slow/heavy characters so characters like Bowser and Zelda dropped out. I think your main 'chooses' you in a way, because you usually pick the character that fits your playstyle :)

It really is more your main chooses you than visa-versa. I remember when I first got SSB4 I decided I'd use Robin or Villager as my main, but so far I've been having the best time using Kirby instead. Granted, I haven't been giving every fighter equal practice time (I don't think I've even done 2 matches with Dr. Mario), so maybe someone else is my "true" main. Either way, there's a difference between which character you'd like to play as and which character you're good at playing as, so your main is probably not going to be your first pick.

Haha, both Marth's and Falco's d-airs changed this game, and not for the better.

I began playing Samus in SSBU. I played a Ike in brawl. but he didn't really work in SSBU

It really depends on the character in general for me. I choose my main by my favorite characters, or the strengths and abilities when battling. Most of the time, I choose my mains.

I usually use the characters I may have used before (in Brawl) because the attacks/abilities are similar in the 3DS version (from my experience). That's because I'm already used to their fighting style. I also like to try out new characters that were introduced from time to time. :3

I try to find my own strategies with characters in SSB4, my main is Villager ( Wii U ) and Pit ( 3DS ), but I change who i be a whole lot so it's hard to predict me. I'm just not exactly Bowser, Ike, Yoshi, or Pac-man.

I actually got to choose my mains thank you. I chose Mario because he is my favorite Nintendo character, Pacman looked really cool in the trailer, Yoshi my favorite Nintendo character when I was a kid and when the Miis came out, they were my thing. Of course, some of the characters I use choose me, like Jigglypuff, Alph and Rosalina. I never intended to use these characters.

I've always felt you can bring out the most potential in a character if you enjoy using them, and your playstyle fits them well - nerfs can change that though. I actually really like Marth as a character + FE, but I'm unsure if I should keep using him or not. Captain Falcon quickly became a close secondary of mine, after being pretty dang awful in Brawl.

Well, as @Moon Rain said, it really depends on your play style, or if you're into competitive playing.
For my part, I've mained Robin and Shulk because I feel like I can adapt quite easily to their movesets, but I can't adapt to some characters. So, yep, it's mostly based on how you play the game.

For sure. I really do like Marth, but he struggles with every top tier charcter, so I might drop him, or have stronger secondaries to cover his worse matchups.

I don't really think so, I used to play a lot with Donkey Kong, but in order to get bored of him I just dropped him and started using other characters. So, to me it is just a matter of not getting bored of playing with the same character but when the time to be serious comes, Donkey is the only I play with hahaha

I choose Jigglypuff, and it choose me.
I jst really kinda decided one day I'd try Jigglypuff because why not? Then I got really good with it and it fit my playing style perfectly (I prefer the air )
So it was both for me

Yoshi has been my main since Brawl. I chose him because of his speed, high flutter, and move set. I would't say that he chose me at al lol.

In my opinion you can choose your main because since melee ive always been good with falco and his wave dashing was perfect for me to adjust to, in brawl he was also my main. even though they made the gameplay light and slow he was a good person i was able to play with.

For project m [for those who know what that is] he was my seconed best under roy but was my first best at a point and I adjusted to him easier then i did in any other game. For smash u hes not my best, lucina ,pit, and dark pit are my top so it did change but i was and stilll am interested with falco so i got good with him and hes one of my top players.

so i think you can choose your main as long as you take the time to adjust to that person.

I like the main to choose me. I like hopping around each character on the selection screen but I know generally how to make the best of using them. Characters with easy to hit aerials or distant grabs/throws (like Samus) are my favorite however when using the character I would rather like to read the opponent by using certain moves but when close up I might go for a good down air. Marth is still really good if not better in my opinion because he doesn't need distance, just good aim. Until I can fix my circle pad I'm using Toon Link, Sonic, Koopalings, or Yoshi because they don't depend on dashing and can use their specials to make them hard to hit.

I like maining characters that excel in my type of gameplay so then I would say that Villager is my main and I really do choose him a lot :D I just like how his moves are very versatile and that he has 2 good recovery moves which are the Lloid Rocket and the Ballon Lift :p

I think ssbm Marth and falco were definitely better. Also, I think you kinda choose your main. One generally has a preference, like swordfighters, or cute puffballs. But you also tend to like characters in that range that you feel are better than others. For example, my mains are toon link, robin, and Ike. They're all swordfighters.
