Well, when I try to go on the Mario Cup by Nintendo, the game goes in a group, but then random things happen and I have to take out the cart and then put it back in just to get to the title screen. Can I do friend battles when I'm battling?

Isn't friend battles your friends and other randoms? If it's only friends just like a community, then I guess it should be fine.

There's no such thing as friend battling (or racing) in Mario Kart 7 unless it's through communities or local play. There's no guarantee communities won't work for you in a significantly smaller community with a maximum of five people.
