How Much Mains Should You Have? Quantity vs Quality

I have 3 mains usually. Pikachu, the awesome Greninja, and Yoshi. Sometimes I switch Yoshi for Mario or Jigglypuff. I think having too much is too little. Quality with a low quantity is a good idea bc what is good about having 10 mains. I still though am now too good at these characters and still don't feel like Iam getting better at all. Do you get better knowing, understanding, train a variety of characters OR stic king to a few characters and keep playing them till there full potential is better? It is boring to stick with just few character. Maybe I am not learning anything. So I don't know if Quantity or Quality is better. Everyone is different tho. I want to know what you think.

Honestly it really depends on how you feel about certain characters yourself. I prefer characters that play well in the air and have good speed to chain combos and what not. I main kirby and my secondaries are toon link greninja yoshi marth mewtwo and olimar. That's 1 main and 6 secondaries. I'm not gonna say that I'm amazing with these characters but I can play them really well and have practiced combos and kill strats with these characters more than the rest of the roster.

A character who you main is usually a character who fits you're style of play the most :p So depending on your style of play , it affects how much mains you can have , though generally anyone could have any amount of mains as they wish :rotfl: as long as they main them well :p

I think you should have a minimum amount of mains but more than one. If they are well rounded like Fox or Luigi then you shouldn't really need another main but if you have characters that cannot deal with projectiles and you know you are going to get hit by them you may need to use a projectile character or character that can reflect back. If you have a slow main you should also have a fast main. It's not bad to have more than one main however even if they are well rounded. You could main Captain Falcon, Meta Knight, and Luigi. It's just up to the player to memorize the edge guards and what works the best as far as combos go.

If you're serious about Smashing then you should keep your number of mains limited. Your mains should probably cover eachother's weaknesses in case an unfavorable matchup comes up. However if you're not that much into the tourney scene and just want to get good at characters then go for trying to be good at a bunch of them. I frequently play a whole bunch of characters (even though I play some more than others).

I don't think that there's anything wrong with having multiple mains. However, you need to know how to use the characters properly.
I currently have four mains: Greninja, Marth, Shulk, Meta Knight.
I'm proficient with Meta Knight and Marth the most, but I'm trying my best to learn Greninja properly.

Thanks for your thoughtful answers I like it if it keeps going.

I have 5 mains right now that I use the most. Those are Ganondorf, Zero suit Samus, Sonic, Greninja and Mewtwo. I usually use my mains, but I like to use all characters. I think having many mains is good, because if you get tired of a specific character, you could always switch to another one that you are good at

maybe three maybe five.I don't know I have four pit,dark pit,meta knight,captain falcon

I have four mains in smash bros: Toon Link, Lucina, Dark Pit and Robin. I personally think that it's perfectly fine to have more than one main, since the characters you pick all have different play styles that suit different people, and it's perfectly fine.

I have several mains. They are Toon Link, Mega Man, Mario, Mr. Game and Watch, Luigi, and Samus. These characters suit my play style while I try not to spam some moves very often since nobody likes spammers and it may be considered as cheating.

I do not considered it as cheating to me. Good Job bringing that up. I think spam should be used as a strategy. Everyone is doing it and it could benefit and get use to dealing with annoying projectiles. But at the same time projectiles aren't enough and is useless sometimes when you opponent knows how to deal with it or close to you.

Right now I only have two mains, greninja and link. I'm working on trying to be better with mewtwo, I just got him. I like Chiang my mains around once in a while and like to be fairly good with most characters in the roster just so that when I'm playing a friend we both don't only use one or two characters the whole time

I think it's best to keep it limited to 3 mains at most. If you keep switching mains it may effect the battle as you may not be familiar with each moveset/abilities belonging to a character (if you do manage to main several characters, kudos to you). You can build up more skills/experience with lesser mains and focus more. I myself use Kirby for the most part, and Ness as a backup.

As with what @Mikaya said, I also go with 2 or 3. It's best to choose "quality over quantity", since maining too many characters might end up with you confused and maybe you forget which character does what, etc...

Plus, a nice strategy to do is to have a "physical" character who will attack your opponent directly, and another who can make you win some time/allow attacks from a longer distance, which can be useful if used well.

So, yes, 2 or 3 at most, no more no less. More will end up confusing you, less will end up having you owned by predictability.

I play a foray of different characters and solemnly do I consider myself "maining" them.

I pick up whoever I want to play at the time but in a tournament setting (which I've had the splendid opportunity of going to three so far, yesterday being the most recent) I limit myself to play my top two or three and occasionally a pocket character that I may think wins a match up.

It's heavily dependent on the player but I agree with @Mikaya and @D4rkDragon , having 2-3 is just the right amount to alleviate any predictability one might experience when against competition.

I use Villager and Pikachu as my mains. I used to main Greninja but it is too nerfed :p Pocket is very amuusing and quite powerful to use and Pikachu is awesome and easy to control :) Greninja was great before nerf :(

I think it depends on the person. Some people are able to effectively use every single character in the roster as if they main'ed each and every one of them. Most people, though, stick to only a few characters. It doesn't really matter, since smash players can encompass both quality and quantity. Mastering Smash requires players to go beyond their character comfort zone, and sticking to only a few or less characters provokes this mastery. Being the best at Pokemon calls for catching 'em all. Same deal with Smash, but less catching, and more perfecting.

Actually it calls for EV training them, giving good movesets, breeding for egg moves, IVs, abilities, Hidden Powers, getting the right item, and getting a good strategy. For Smash... you tell me :p I can't prefect at smash at all xP
