How Much Mains Should You Have? Quantity vs Quality

you should have like two to three mains but one is enough. I master Bowser Jr and other players like that. I am also mastering villager cuz I heard he is really awesome if you know how to use him. You should have one main which you know how to use well.

Let's make it debatable, counter arguments...I sometimes think quantity is better sometime cause you can have a range of knowledge of not just one character but many. Knowing the opponent Moveset is important too.

I always questioned myself this. I personally think that 2 or 3 mains are enough. Anymore than 3 will might be hard to remember. Also, you might lose your skills with one character, then another, then you'll have to practice the characters all over again. It'll just be hard to catch up on. Also because the mains are little, you can think of better strategys and combos for the characters, then worrying on the others. I have 3 mains.
They are Kirby, Toon Link, and Pikachu.

If you're serious about smash, here's my two cents.

Get good with all the characters. Be aware and comfortable with all the moves, strings and potential combos characters have. When you're set on that, then choose 1 or 2 mains, those characters you're most adept with and feel natural to you. This way you'll be more than capable with your prediction game, and that could lead to merciless punishment. This is very prominent in street fighter, and is evident in that famous Daigo video. After a certain point you'll become so instinctive using a char because of muscle memory, and that's what advanced players have all achieved.
To summarize my point with respect to the thread title, a jack of all trades is a master of none. Be good with all the characters to be able to read opponents better, but invest into that one character you main, and you're set to go.

Personally I only play sm4sh casually, so I go around using 6 main characters. I have no interest in pursuing it at an advanced level, as I am already a street fighter player.

So you chose both quantity and quality? Which do you think is better?

Depends on your objectives.

If you want to go and win competitions, quality.
If you want to have fun, where results and gameplay doesn't matter to you, quantity.

I think you should have as many mains as you want now I have too many mains people tell me others think I don't have too many but I like variety. I mean I love Ike it's fun to kill people with him :3. But I don't like constantly playing as Ike I like to use other characters but still kick butt which is why I have so many mains. I can tell you the list now it goes Mario, Peach, Wario, Bowser Jr., ZSS, Pit, Dark Pit, Palutena, Marth, Ike, Robin, Meta Knight, Little Mac, King Dededede,(He's new) Ness, Captain Falcon, Wii Fit, Shulk, Greninja and Sonic. I think I am missing some but I main around 20 characters of course my main main will always be Ike <3

Actually it calls for EV training them, giving good movesets, breeding for egg moves, IVs, abilities, Hidden Powers, getting the right item, and getting a good strategy. For Smash... you tell me :p I can't prefect at smash at all xP
It's impossible to perfect in Pokemon battles.

If you're serious about Smashing then you should keep your number of mains limited. Your mains should probably cover eachother's weaknesses in case an unfavorable matchup comes up. However if you're not that much into the tourney scene and just want to get good at characters then go for trying to be good at a bunch of them. I frequently play a whole bunch of characters (even though I play some more than others).
To be serious you need both. But both isn't really an optionXD then again no one cares

I personally like to have 4 mains at a time just in case someone else chooses one of my mains I guess that is not necessary but it really depends on you you should not just choose more characters to have more mains you should find quality characters that fit your play style.

Do you think playing a character against a same character fun? I do because I learn things but I don't know why people say stuff about disrespect.

I do not personally like playing against the same character as my self because I think the point of smash bros. is for characters from completly different universes friend or foe to face off I never heard anything about disrespect and that is not why I do not like playing with same characters and it is still fun it is just not my preferred way of playing.

Yes you may have more than one main. But I do recommend that you keep it basic if you are competitive, like me I am so used to Shulk so I always used him since The day I've first played ssb4.
