Is the 3DS in its final days?

not at all. It has done pretty good recently. It's still a relatively new handheld. There are still many games to be released for it. At least a few more years are left in the 3DS. Nintendo is far from ready from developing a new handheld already.

I think there won't be a new handheld console until 2018 (four years) but who knows Nintendo is unpredictable when it comes to new hardware. I agree with @Mikaya the 3DS still feels like a starting console, it wouldn't be smart for Nintendo to just discontinue something so vital (portable gaming).

I expect a new handheld in 2017 - early 2018 most likely. The 3DS still has a lot of potential and it will be a while before Nintendo releases a new one. In addition, Nintendo really needs time to make sure the next handheld is really something revolutionary. The 3DS was built on the concept of 3D which was a novel feature at best. The next console will be heavily integrated with the Wii U's successor too and making sure that gets developed properly is important. Not to mention, it's too early to decide what the next big thing will be. Nintendo has always been patient so I expect them to analyze the market for a good long time before making any major decisions/moves.

I don't think it will be for at least a couple more years, it needs the 3DS now, look at it's stock market value over the last five years, it's gone down. I hope Nintendo can make this run even though they have fell at least 6 times with Sony and Microsoft way ahead of them.

I expect for a couple of more years for 3DS domination. They have the chance to assess their options for their next handheld, plan out the games schedule while releasing some great games every couple of months and getting 3rd parties to fill the gaps. The 3DS' library only got so good a year ago in 2013, and 2014 has been somewhat disappointing so far (but will pick up near Christmas to guarantee lots of sales) so they need to build up 2015 with another new IP, revive an old loved IP like Metroid, make another remake like Majora's Mask 3D and release a major Mario game or something similar with one of their biggest IPs. Do something completely unexpected and get TONS of 3rd party wrapped up for 2015 and 2016.

In my opinion we will see the sucessor in 2016, due the lack of power of the 3DS itself.
Maybe 2017 if the piracy isn't strong.

Nah the 3ds still has a bunch of life in it! Personally I believe we'll see a new home console before we see a new handheld! We will probably see a new handheld around 2017 or 2016 depending on how long Nintendo wishes to keep bringing new games to the console! I love my 3DS and hope that its life will continue thriving for a long time! I'm not so sure about the Wii U however...? Its also got a while left but not as !much as the 3ds

I was thinking...
What if Nintendo release a upgraded console like it was with DS and DSi?
It would be same console, with more power (dud) and an extra stick...
