No, you don't need a master ball to catch it. Heck, I caught my Xerneas after weakening it and paralyzing it with a pokeball...and it was the FIRST pokeball I threw at it. The catch rate isn't a problem. You never need the masterball, but it helps with later legendaries like Mewtwo.

Typically you only find one masterball in regular gameplay, but if you get really lucky in the lottery in Lumiose City, it's possible to get another.

As a warning, with the rare ones, it may be a bit difficult without using the masterball, but make sure you stock up on ultra balls A LOT. I'm talking like over 20 a lot. Legendaries other than Xerneas/Yveltal can be annoying to catch.

Lol, save the game right before you try catching the legendary. That way, if you make it faint by accident, power off.

to expand on that, if you save right before the battle, with some legendaries if you soft reset enough you can encounter its shiny form. Xerneas/Yveltal are said to be shiny locked (meaning you can't encounter their shiny form) but perhaps you're able to get shinies for other legendaries in the game?

If you ever feel like getting a shiny legendary, it'd definitely be good to have a masterball for when you encounter it, so you don't run the risk of fainting it or running out of ultra balls. You know where the lottery is @3dsatackman ?

yeah mew two is the beast -

HOW TO CATCH WITHOUT A MASTER BALL GUIDE FOR LOL -------------------PEOPLE WHO USED IT ON MAGNETONS---------------------

mewtwo at lv 70

trick is have a pokemon that know the move false swipe in your party- have 2 - trained - you can get the TM -
it will make the target heath to 1 but its attack power is 40 so only use it at the end of a battle -
when mew twos health is at red or yellow

also have a pokemon thats got a status move that makes - only these ones = sleep - frozen - best ones

save then start the battle - soft restart - ask @naagza i don't know - new to 3 d.s. -if you want shiny - it may take 84612 times to get a shiny loll

first weaken it with bug - ghost - dark - type moves - x2 effective -pure ghost or dark is a good choice
after its life becomes red or yellow this is what i'd do

get your pokemon with the move false swipe on show and use it until his life is a tiny red - use it as many times as you want - it won't kill - i tried to kill pokemon with false swipe ( experiment ) i will not work so chill

then either put it to sleep or freeze it -

after keep using poke balls - normal - until number 10 - might catch if not - follow instructions below

if it un froze - woke up

then use ultra balls - if night use dusk balls

THEN CATCH IT !!!

IF NOT TOO BAD

RESTART THE BATTLE

BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME

to soft restart I'm pretty sure it's some combination like L+R+Start. I remember accidentally doing it a couple times.

Also, don't forget that Pokebank event Celebi has that move called Hold Back that works just like False Swipe. Once Pokebank is out, that's an option too! Also, I'd say paralyzing is the best way because freeze and sleep are temporary...

yeah but I've got many pokemon guides - I'm like a pokemon collector/ fan / strategist so yeah - not saying I'm the smartest but i know a lot since i was young
all the books - official - say that inflict it with a status condition but frozen and sleep are the best
they make the capture rate higher - the capture o power will help too
and yes the celebi will help

Yes, freeze and sleep are the best for it (2x vs 1.5x for catch rate), but in the long run the 1.5x is a bit better. If it's a hard legendary, then it would be frustrating to have to keep reapplying the status (particularly freeze: I don't think there's a status move that directly freezes).

If you were to just T-wave it, then problem solved: it won't be able to get out of it (unless it's Rayquaza and uses Rest). Statuses other than paralysis run the risk of running out of Power Points if the battle takes too long, so beware..

to each his own haha if it works for you, nothing's stopping you. If sleep has worked for you typically, that's great. For me, it never really did, which is why I rely on things like paralysis. Even with the Rayquaza battle I'd have issues with the self-induced sleep from rest (not because it only lasted 2 turns, but because Rayquaza was quick to escape from the pokeballs I threw at him many times).

I guess what we should take out of it is that everyone has their own style for playing the game, and that includes for catching pokemon. Definitely helps to figure out what one's comfortable strategy is ahead of time so that they can prepare for these hard legendary battles

I completely agree with you on False Swipe (as well as Hold Back once we're able to get that Celebi from the Pokebank event). As for sleep, yeah, with many legendaries that could work well in conjunction with False Swipe. I can see where you're coming from now given that the limite PP argument isn't that viable in such conditions. Personally, I've played more of Hoenn where False Swipe wasn't really that easy to get, so I haven't had the opportunity to try that strategy out too much. I can tell it's really great though given that it prevents a pokemon from fainting to help maximize the catch rate.

Damaging a certain Pokemon that you want to catch will increase the catching rate , but if you add a condition to it like , Sleep or either Paralysis and ofc Poison there's a higher chance when you do both of these.

The answer to your dillema is simple. Try and win it in the Lottery in Lumiose City. :)
